Nicely done.

I'm a bit surprised no MIT students have done something similar to the statue of John Harvard.

LOL!

Did all the statues get masks, or is the flower seller the only considerate one?

That's the nicest thing anyone's done for that statue in a long time.

I remember when it originally said "I AM NOT A MOONIE", and wonder when and why the last part was removed.

Religious tolerance reasons, perhaps? I had to look it up, but a "Moonie" is a member of the Unification Church. I can't imagine "I am not a Jew" would have lasted either.

I kind of like that it's just "I am not." It seems like at least once a week during the summer I see a group standing there trying to figure what he's not.

I don't think that's comparable, when it comes to whether it would've lasted. Most people think of Jewish as a religion, and Moonies as a cult, and social standards about cults are different than about religions.

Fair point. I am religiously ignorant and don't much bother differentiating between religions and cults.

I read about that. All of the statues were modeled after real people, and the original guy that sold flowers wore a shirt or button that said "I am not a Moonie" because there were a preponderance of Moonies that would canvass around T stops (rather like the Scientologists in nice weather these days). In order to promote his own sales, he made it clear that there was no affiliation. If I can find the original link, I'll post it here.

I used to live in the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle. There's a piece of public art there that people are constantly dressing up in interesging ways, Waiting for the Interurban (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/9060). I think it would be excellent if wry and clever dressing of our statuary became a local custom here too.

It Happens Over There, Too

The statue of the Duke of Wellington that stands in front of the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow regularly (and famously) sports a traffic cone on his head.

Unfortunately, they didn't get a mask on the guy on the other side of the T station fast enough. When I walked by, he was clearly writhing in agony (http://www.flickr.com/photos/logoparenthetes/2929979441/)... and that horrible couple was just staring at him.
