bluefin in the porter exchange, as mentioned above, is good and cheap without being worrisome.
south of the river, shino express in copley square - if anybody ever tells you you can't have something good, fast *and* cheap all at the same time? point 'em here.
if you're looking for a place to sit and relax and chat a little, though, you're better off either with bluefin or with umi in the fenway.
if you have a car and you're willing to drive FOREVER, oishii in sudbury (which is, yes, kind of far >.< ) has the best sushi ever ever. however, it's a. in SUDBURY, and b. not exactly cheap. (probably about average price for really good suburban sushi, tho.) it's so, so good.
but if you don't want to drive to sudbury (and really, who could blame you), bluefin is yummy. and i second shino express.
there's an Oishii in Chestnut Hill, too, which is spectacular and not too far out of Boston. not at all cheap, but they give you huge cuts of fish. definitely more worth the money than Ginza or Fugakyu, though those are both high-quality.
Bluefin is indeed cheap, and conveniently located, but distinctly mediocre. not bad or scary, but not that great. Shino Express, however, (especially the lunch specials) is indeed good and cheap. Yoshi's and Hana are both relatively affordable, but from what i can tell Yoshi's has gone downhill while Hana is really pretty good.
Takeshima and Tsunami are both pretty good Coolidge Corner options for good sushi (Tsunami has some yummy creative stuff going for them) at more reasonable prices than Fugakyu. still not quite cheap, but not quite as pricey.
if you're willing to go a little farther out, Sushi Island in Wakefield is really good and not too expensive, and i was really impressed with the quality and variety of the all-you-can-eat on weeknights special at Sushi Corner in Melrose . very yummy and affordable.
Just wanted to add to the acclaim for bluefin. If you want to really optimize your spending, get the "N pieces for M$" special, make that order entirely nigiri, and add maki at the regular price. (And make sure to try tatsuta-age.)
I love Sweet Chili (which is actually a few blocks from Inman, on Cambridge Street), but their sushi isn't so great, just okay. I usually have something else there along with one or two sushi rolls. If I were going for just sushi, I'd go elsewhere.
I'm pretty happy with the price/performance of their sushi. I'm also totally in love with the mackerel nigiri, which I haven't enjoyed as much anywhere else.
My favorite place in the area for good sushi on the inexpensive side is Takeshima, on Harvard Street in Brookline just a little bit up from the Coolidge Corner Theater - it's near the Arcade mall, where Grand Opening is.
For really great sushi, there's Ginza x2, Fugakyu, Oishii, and a few others, but they're all more expensive.
Seconded. This is 5 blocks from Davis Square. Take the bike path from behind the T, and walk to MassAve, and it's a block to the left and across the street.
"me too" on Hana. I liked Hana a bit better than Bluefin, but to be fair, I've only tried Bluefin once and I've been to Hana several times.
Also if you are willing to drive a bit and have a big appetite, Minado's in Natick is great - all you can eat sushi. $14 for lunch, $25 or so for dinner. Also, if it's your birthday and you go with at least 3 other people, you eat for free! :)
hana has a 'las vegas' roll: eel, avacado, cream cheese, wrapped together and DEEP FRIED. i was able to get a absolutely-no-sushi friend to try that roll. between hana/bluefin i'd go to hana. delivery: cambridge/somerville/belmont for sure, other areas not sure. (617)868-2121, i'm sure they'd be happy to let you know where they deliver.
Not quite "cheap", but definitely "reasonably priced" -- Asai, in Belmont Center. The husband and I typically get the sushi special, an appetizer or two, and some extra miso soup (the special comes with one, but we are two :), and it comes to around $30. You can get there by commuter rail if transportation is an issue (or, like us, by bike!).
I used to like Bluefin, but then I started going to Asai, and, well...I can tell why Bluefin's cheaper.
