Does anyone know of this guy who hangs out in Davis Square a lot, usually in the morning. He has a mohawk like hairdo, talking to himself, punching air, putting devil horns on his head, and always asking people for a cigarette or a light.

He's crazy, and he's seriously pissing me off.

Just one of the joys of city living. Get used to it. Unless he seriously threatens you or somebody else, then it's time to tell the cops.

ayep.

also, if they're going to ask for anything, i really don't mind when people ask for a smoke. better than money, and they usually aren't pushy about it, and i usually have one to spare.

Yeah, he's one of the local crazies - not as scary as the yelling powderhouse guy.

Mike often just wants people to flash him a peace sign. If he has more serious unintelligible things to tell you, I have found that telling him to back the fuck off in a serious tone does the trick.

Oh, I know, but when you're walking along with your mind somewhere completely else and he suddenly yells hello, it can be kind of startling.

Even more startling is when he runs after you while screaming.

I gave him the peace sign as I biked past this morning. He looked happy about it.

wow I wish I had known this peace sign trick earlier! Really would have come in handy.

Actually, commenting on a stranger's looks isn't necessarily experienced as "nice" by said stranger. People go out on the street to live their lives, not to invite reviews of their appearance from others.

That said, clearly this guy has some serious psychological and/or neurological issues going on, so it's not like he's being rude on purpose. I would suggest to the OP that learning how to detach politely from strangers is a really useful skill of city life.

I agree. Many people are unaware of it, but there are not a whole lot of places for people with Mental Illness to be. Certainly not many places to live. All of the state hospitals and other facilities have been closed. Rather than feeling anger, I feel pity.
