This was just sent out to Tufts folks -- thought it was close enough for Davis Square folks to be concerned:

At approximately 4:17 PM today an armed robbery occurred off-campus in the west Medford area near High Street. There were three suspects and a firearm was shown. Medford Police has apprehended two of the three suspects, and has not recovered the firearm reportedly shown in the robbery. The third suspect was last seen in the area around College Avenue and Frederick Avenue, near the Tufts University athletic fields and Cousens Gym complex.

The description of the suspect is a light-skinned black male, teen-aged, last seen wearing jeans, a white tee-shirt and a black backpack. He was on a BMX-style bicycle.

oof, that's pretty close to me. High St is fairly long, did it say any cross streets?

Well, if they mean West Medford proper, I'd guess around Boston Ave. It's a little way from Frederick Ave in South Medford but well within biking distance.

I had the Tufts announcements bookmarked but it hasn't shown up yet:

PS. Is there any way for community members to get on that email list?

Wow, from a Davis Square perspective I think of that as quiet suburbia. Not a place where this kind of thing happens. Yikes.

I live right off of High Street (though a little aways from the Boston Ave section). I always thought our biggest problems were the damn teenagers who hang out in the parking lot. (Seriously, they're out there until 2am). Also, I evidently don't pay attention to any local news since I never heard about this.

Did anybody read about the guy who got shot in Harvard Yard recently? I think they don't even have the shooters. Plenty of publicity on that one, despite all the copycats it will generate.

I heard about it from a bartender. While walking to the bar, I knew something was up because I saw those two damned news copters circling in a Harvardly direction, and thought back to the choppers-over-Davis thread from here the other day. Geez, they really are vultures...

It wasn't "in Harvard Yard". It was in one of the River Houses. That's actually even worse, since the houses are supposed to be locked at all times and not accessible to non-residents.

Oh, OK, I would not know, since I rarely walk there.

I wasn't walking anywhere near there when this happened, but I think I paid closer attention to the news reports than you did. (None of the ones I read mentioned Harvard Yard.)

As far as I know, the guy walked around for a while after being wounded, outside the dorm (and was helped by a student outside the dorm). But yes, I agree, the precise location where he was shot makes all the difference. Thanks for your attention to relevant details.

The initial reports said Harvard Yard, they were changed later when more details were given to mention the card accessible dorm and the stairwell. So both of you are actually right :)One just read the news at a different time than the other.
