A few times a month I like to go to the Green Tomato for lunch. I think they do a very good job at offing Davis Square diners a good inexpensive alternative /addition to the other restaurants. If you have not given them a try, I would recommend it.

I'm posting this because I get the feeling that they could REALLY use more business and I am hoping they stick around!

If they're offing davis square diners then perhaps their problem is repeat business?

(just kidding, thanks for the suggestion, I have not tried them but will.)

LOL! I read that too and had the same thought. Poisoning customers probably isn't a good business model for a restaurant. :P

I definitely find their hot meals to be a good value.

If I remember correctly, this was a problem at boloco and they fixed it. They offered Ron Newman and others from this community a chance to tour the basement area and see that they cleaned up and fixed that problem when they took over.

I didn't take any such tour, but maybe someone else did. And I think the Boloco guy said he fixed the problem, which occurred in a previous restaurant on the site.

I haven't seen any giant roaches, but there's a giant ant further down Elm Street.

We love bugs! TO DEATH.

I used to live next to Best Pest Conctrol, and appreciate their somewhat conflicted relationship with insects. There seems to exist a basic disconnect between their beehive (seen on that page), the cute cartoon-bug kitsch that fills their street-facing window display, and the basic nature of their business.

Perhaps I'm inviting stalkers (ha), but that's my house! Makes it so easy to give directions. :)

I also thought that in the last post where they said Green Tomato II was open, someone stated that the pest problem was an issue with the structure of the building that was unavoidable, and would be there no matter what. There was some argument to that. Link to post here:

Thanks for posting the link to the post that started all of this. I tried to find it and couldn't.

In my opinion I think the whole roach charge is unfair to them. They offered Ron a tour and it seems like they have definitely made an effort to fix the problem.

Yeah, it was the first "Green Tomato is open!" post, and not the second or third ;) I had some trouble finding it as well! (though it was appropriately tagged!)

I'd totally forgotten that they offered to give me a tour.

Considering I think I recall the Boloco guy saying that the walk-in freezers got RIPPED OUT, it might be a nice favor to Green Tomato to stop mentioning the roach-problem-in-the-freezers-they-don't-have thing. :P

I went the first week they were open, and was sort of baffled. Their menus were written on large pieces of cardstock, the server behind the counter looked confused and couldn't answer basic questions about the food, and my friend's terrible pasta dish took nearly 20 minutes to cook.

I'll give them another try.

Went there tonight after reading this post, very good prices, huge portions and great tasting food. I got the chicken parm with angel hair pasta, yum! It's a shame it's in that building, it feels so antiseptic.

i second the recommendation. it's good comfort food and the staff are nice. it's a nice space, especially now in summer when all the doors/windows are open. and they have free wi-fi and easy to find outlets

Does anyone have any idea how they're doing, beyond the sense that they could use some more business?

my husband said he thinks they make most of their money from catering, so his impression was they could hold out without such a big customer base in the restaurant, at least for a bit... obviously it would be best for them to have lots of traffic/customers....

don't know if that's true or not, though...

I tried to go once - they were closed at something like 8 or 9 on a Saturday night. I sort of lost sympathy for that business model...
