Anyone know of a place in Somerville (or Cambridge) that carries non-bleached, organic, cotton stuffing, in small quantities (I don't need to stuff a couch or anything, just some small stuffed critters)?

A C Moore seems possible, but I'd prefer to buy local, as they say. And I know there are a few specialty crafty/yarn/sewing shops in the area...

Haha I am so done offering suggestions here.

Many not-very-helpful suggestions.

I don't think Woolcott has stuffing (they'd have cotton yarn if you wanted to stuff your critters with that...). I've gotten polyfill stuffing from the sewing machine store in Davis, but I don't recall organic unbleached cotton there. Mind's Eye Yarn has fiber for spinning, but their web site doesn't mention details of what. There is apparently a Cambridge Quilt Shop, which seems plausible to me that it might have cotton, but I have never been there.

I'd second the Mind's Eye suggestion. Of all the excellent yarn stores around, they seem the most likely to have this kind of thing. It might also be worth calling Stitch House (http://stitchhousedorchester.com) which has some sewing supplies in addition to yarn, and is a short walk from the red line.

Please do, and stop harassing people who are trying to help (a regrettable situation you won't long have to deal with anymore, I predict).

playtime in Arlington center probably does. They are a huuuuuge craft store right on the 77 bus, really not far from Davis.

generally when asking questions of an LJ community, 99.999% of responses are akin to noise, not terribly useful but kind of good background. very unlikely anyone will be able to answer with a definitive "yes" to this kind of question.

is it frustrating? potentially.

the best way to handle it is just say "thanks" and move on, not write a long comment about how their response was not what you're looking for, otherwise you get the long threads of comments defending well-intentioned but perhaps-misdirected help.

because when asking a group of people this large any kind of question, people are going to read it differently and you will get a lot of noise. if you don't want to deal with the noise at all, avoid the crowd entirely.

it's unsolicited advice, but i hope it helps you in the future, even if i can't tell you where to find the cotton you're looking for :P

I've got nothing if you're dedicated to the idea of cotton. But if you want wool... there's another story. (And, as a fellow critter-stuffer, I greatly prefer wool -- not nearly so lumpy as cotton and much more forgiving.) Mind's Eye Yarn definitely has good quality wool fleece -- I bought some there the other day. I'm about 90 percent certain that she has organic, but that's only 90 percent.

I know for 100 percent that Drumlin Farm in Lincoln has organic wool and it's not only local, it's RAISED local. Cool, no? I suspect that Lincoln is out of your current range, but I'll be there tomorrow and would be happy to pick up a bag (with 10 percent off cuz I'm an Audubon member!) and bring it to you in Davis on Friday morning?

you can email me at genevramcneil [at] gmail.com if you're interested.

I know of 5 places that carry what you're looking for in the neighborhood you're asking about. But you didn't ask if they had it in stock...so how would this information help you?

Does the :-) make you a nicer person?

I have an otherwise unused torn king-sized quilt batt piece, organic unbleached cotton, sitting in my fabric closet. You can have it for free. The only caveat I can see to it is that since it's designed for batting it's very low loft.

I'm even home today. You can PM me if you are interested.

I am sorry that no one knows the answer you seek. It must be very frustrating to ask for help only to be given information that isn't useful to you.

It is similarly frustrating for people to try to help you with what information they have, only to be told that they are making you upset.

Communication is hard. You seem to assume that people will be able to determine that you are unwilling to phone stores or visit them to see if they have what you want. That's quite a leap from the terse message you have written here.

Please also remember that posts on a forum such as this are helpful for more than just the original poster; there is now a list of local-ish craft places such that others can refer to when they need something. So while the answers have been useless to you, they are not useless to everyone.

Good luck finding stuffing for what are undoubtably wonderful stuffed critters. If you think that a particular store might be a good bet, perhaps you could edit your post asking someone else to call or visit them and find out.

(edited: to finish a sentence that somehow got away from me)

Your ungrateful behavior ... I have no words. But I do have a suggestion per your cotton dilimma:

Stuff it.
