election question

Thanks to everyone who's posted such great info on tomorrow's primaries, especially those who've explained the differences between some of the state house and senate candidates. There's one other contested spot on my ballot that I'm trying to figure out: Middlesex County Sheriff.

Anyone know anything about what the responsibilities of that position are? Or why James DiPaola, Robert A. DeMoura, or Brian M. Gillis should or should not get my vote?

While we're at it, anybody have any $.02 to offer on any other local races that haven't been mentioned yet? The more local the race the harder the time I seem to have finding good info online about the candidates...

gillis was arrested for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident a couple of years ago (although he claims that he hasn't had a drink since, he was apparently something of a binge drinker before that). he also has a more recent restraining order against him from an ex-girlfriend, and was arrested for violating it.

The only thing I could find on that is this Lowell Sun article (http://216.239.41.104/search?q=cache:LOhhkXCKrn0J:www.lowellsun.com/Stories/0,1413,105~4761~2122248,00.html+%22brian+gillis%22+restraining+order&hl=en) (google cached) which doesn't really explain what happened. rmd, do you know anything else?
