 Turkey and her chick
Anyone else see the turkey hen and her one chick (or whatever a baby turkey is called) wandering around? My neighbor and husband saw it yesterday; apparently it had more than one chick then :( . I saw it this morning at 8:15 am in our back yard. It then crossed our street, Hall Ave (why did the turkey cross the road?). Other questions: where does it roost at night? Where the heck is the gobbler (or whatever the male is called).

OK, I guess it's still in the same neighborhood.

not a problem... people seem to enjoy this topic, it gives people an excuse to post more turkey photos, and it got a nice reply below from Somerville Animal Control.

(and btw, I know a Kathy M. who lives on Hall Ave, but I'm guessing that you are a different Kathy on the same street)

That's probably this one that I saw ~2 weeks ago on Willow Street between the bike path and Ball Square:

I can be hopeful (or perhaps delusional) and think she just left the rest of the kids home for some one on one together time, right? With the amount of outdoor cats in the neighborhood, and cars, I don't have to question what might have happened..

Turkeys roost in trees - its totally insane, but true. Look up near dusk, and you'll see their giant turkey butts perched in the trees branches!

Mama Turkey & Poults

Somerville Animal Control has been getting several calls a day regarding Mama Turkey & her poults. It is not as uncommon as people may think to see wildlife in the city. We just got a call for a wild rabbits nest on the Somerville hospital campus, something I have never seen in all my years living in Somerville. Please allow these animals to go on their way when you see them. Do not EVER try to touch a wild animal even if it is hurt. Unless a wild animal is hurt, ill or acting very erratically, Animal Control will not remove or relocate them. Relocating a wild animal is illegal. If you do find a hurt or injured animal, please call the SPD business line at 617-625-1212 and ask that animal control be dispatch to your location.
I thank everyone for their concern for Mama Turkey and her babies. I personally think they are adorable and find it very interesting that they would choose the heart of Somerville as their home =)
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding wildlife or any other animal control related issues.
