I had my first bad experience at McKinnon's today. The sweet Italian sausages I brought home tonight were not very good. I've always had good luck there, but not today. Usually, their chix, beef, pork and even cold cuts are pretty solid, but I def. would not suggest the sausages.

to add: their chicken livers aren't good. i asked, and they had the same ones they cut for two weeks straight, and they were quite sub par.

I'm a big fan of their chicken sausages, which are normally quite good. Bummer you had a bad experience!

Hmm. I've had 3 different kinds of sausages from them (mostly the sweet Italian), and been pretty happy, but perhaps I am just not picky (also, I typically cook it up in tomato sauce, rather than eating it as a sausage; I suppose that could disguise eh-ness).

Yeah, this. Pretty much exactly.

I gotta say, almost everything I've had there has been great, but I bought some ground turkey recently that made me super sick

I agree, when I first moved to Davis I thought McKinnons was the greatest (mostly because it's cheap), but after several bad experiences and subpar meats I'm done. The foul odor often smelled in the parking lot is enough to make someone sick, let alone eating what's inside.

Ick

When I first arrived I thought "great, a real, local butcher". Then I went in and thought "wtf is this" and ran away. It appears to be just trying to undercut the supermarkets at their own game - questionable quality meat at very low prices.

Call me a yuppie, but I want a local butcher to give me quality and variety that I can't get in the supermarket. I don't see much need for simply a shop which undercuts the supermarket in styrofoam containers of generic watered factory meat. I want rabbit, venison etc. and meat from "happy life" animals.

I suppose this is not the economy to start expecting that to appear.

Yeah, that's what I want too. But until I can afford it, I'll appreciate McKinnon's, especially if they start opening late on Fridays again. I'll swing by this evening and see if they're open until 8, as they were on Fridays until last week.

You're a yuppie

Jimmyfergus, sales of locally/ethically raised meat are booming, so it must be the right economy in some ways. I know for me, the $ savings is coming from not eating out as much as I used to - the meat we buy from the farmers market is so delicious that cooking it is replacing a meal out. So the meat is more expensive, but it's replacing going out to a restaurant, which is often more expensive - especially if we have a beer or two.

I was tempted to make that point too. If (when) I was too poor to buy decent meat, I just didn't eat much meat. Lots of bulk beans and pulses for protein, with a bit of meat every now and then (Indian groceries for plenty of cheap spices to make food appetizing).

I'd rather eat a little decent food than a lot of crap, and lowest-bidder factory-farmed meat is so depressing on many levels. Hence, I am not fond of McKinnon's.

I have to say that I have never had a bad experience at McKinnon's and shop there often. I think the quality of their meats, and the price, is terrific. Although I have seen some changes since they changed hands a year or 2 ago. Some of the changes have been positive, but I'm sure they're quite as conscientous as they used to be.
