Every day this week, I've been on the bus down Holland and at Cameron, somebody pulls a turn so stupid it beggars belief, apparently thinking that by breaking the laws of the road, they can also break the laws of physics (car vs. bus, bus wins, every time). Maybe a light is needed, y/n?

Two problems I usually see with bus/car interactions at that Intersection: The 87/88 bus drivers (and indeed most drivers on that road) drive much too fast, and secondly, the turn is both blind and on a hill, so people have a hard time inching forward the way they should be.

None of this really explains why people at that intersection seem to have such a death wish though. I suspect the problem might be that the relative size of the road compared to other things in the area skews people's perspective so they think the bus is further away than and not going as fast as it really is.

Replying about a million years later just to say that I'm really glad I'm not the only one who's noticed this. Not from the vantage point of a bus passenger, mind you, but as another driver. The worst near-accident I ever had in Boston was when someone came blasting onto Holland from Cameron. I had to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid them. I couldn't resist the urge to honk like a maniac when I caught up to the jerk in Davis Square. I felt bad for the befuddled onlookers, but this dude seriously needed to get the message that he'd pulled a ridiculous and dangerous maneuver. Annoyingly, the driver merely smirked at me in return. I imagine he's still driving like a psycho to this day.

I took the turn from Cameron onto Holland for a few years while I lived on Holland--a light would be awful there and almost certainly cause more problems that it solved.

Also probably even worse for pedestrians, as there would be a press-to-walk button which would come around once every five minutes at most regardless of actual button presses, thus causing everyone to just disregard it.

Ahah! Seriously, traffic and crazy drivers are part of city living. Stop whining about nothing.

Oh, God, LJ needs a "like" button.

Don't change the topic. As I said, take your own advice and get used to city traffic and kamikaze drivers. Or else move somewhere else.

Let's both of you keep this (increasingly personal) argument out of [livejournal.com profile] davis_square, ok?

Sorry, Ron. Just asking for some consistency here.

I don't like the fact that you've been ganged up upon lately. However, in the world of the internet once a community has put you on the shit list there is no way off, and you might as well not try - or in this case put up a fight. Besides dont' you know the OP is the only one allowed to be a douche, a lesson I've learned - he can dish it but not take it.

I suggest finding a place where your sense of humor is appreciated, perhaps the catskills.

I'm not condoning breaking rules, however..."we live in a densely populated city...get used to it" is exactly the kind of stuff you say all the time.

The only thing I could see would be to make Cameron the WIDEST one way street (going from Holland to Mass Ave) evar. But that would only solve half the problem, people would still make kamikaze left turns ONTO Cameron.

And go 80 mph down it...

Cameron was the first street I lived on when I first moved here in 2002, I loved it and hated it, but it was definitely a crash course in Davis Square living :)

Making Cameron one way towards Mass Ave would be a major pain. It would mean there'd be no way to get from Mass Ave to western Somerville without going over to Route 16, or taking Cutter to Highland and sitting in Davis Square traffic.

Oh I entirely agree. I was thinking of ways to make that intersection less dangerous, not ways to help the entirety of Davis Sq. area traffic as a whole.

Using the crosswalk there to get across Holland St. is always an interesting challenge. But it's doable.
