Okay, I have to admit, I was tired and thus stupid. Sunday night around midnight I left my brand new iPod in my not so new Jeep Wrangler on one of the roads between Broadway and Powderhouse up by Teele Square. The Jeep is still there. The iPod is not.

So, the moral is: when you own a car that has zippers keeping the windows closed, do not leave iPods in your cup holders. The rest of you should just make sure you lock up.

Most cars have a lever somewhere in the car that will open the trunk without the key. I had a friend whose car was broken into who said to me, "But it was okay, 'cuz all the valuable stuff was in the trunk," only, she hadn't actually *checked* to see if everything was still in the trunk. She didn't know about the trunk-opening lever in her car. All those valuables: gone. So, check to make sure you *don't* have one, otherwise, stop leaving your valuables in your trunk! :-)

Even if they can open your trunk once they break into the car, most car thieves are looking for stuff they can easily grab, that's likely to have valuables once they take it elsewhere and look through it. If they don't see something like that when they walk by the car, most of the time that's enough to deter them. Leaving things like iPods or backpacks on the car seat can motivate thieves to break into your car, putting them in the trunk means your car doesn't look like a better target than any of the others around it.

Massive suck.

I had my window smashed and a backpack with a laptop, Apple Newton (!), and eyeglasses (among other things) taken from it in broad daylight on a busy street. It's amazing how it affects your world view. I don't really ever leave anything in plain sight in the car anymore.

Sounds like you must live near me--sorry about your bad luck. There's some kids on our street who are always trying door handles, so I make sure my car is always locked, not that it's got anything in it worth stealing.

renter's insurance?

Do you have renter's insurance? Mine covers not only my apartment, but my car as well. Plus it covers electronic devices while I'm travelling, so I don't have to worry about taking my iPod with me when I travel. Now, if your car doesn't lock, I don't know if insurance would still cover it.
