Hello fellow davis-sq.ians,

On Friday May 22nd the house next door to me was broken into, and a break-in was attempted on the first floor of my building; a window was broken on the house next door, and my recycling bin was used as a step stool to get into said window, while the screens on several windows downstairs from me were torn (including the windows facing the street IN BROAD DAYLIGHT), but for some reason the windows remained intact. All that was stolen from the neighbors was some jewelery and a jean jacket, so we can assume that the crime was perpetrated by some kind of meth/oxy addict looking for quick cash.

Yesterday morning the apartment downstairs from me had ANOTHER attempted break-in, but this time my downstairs neighbor was home and caught the woman in the act. The police were called, but the woman has yet to be apprehended: we assume this is the same person who broke into the next door neighbors a few weeks ago, but, obviously, cannot be certain. I am awaiting a description of the suspect from my neighbors, which I will post when I get it, but in the meantime, I just wanted everyone to know that there's a scoundrel afoot.

EDIT: Here's the description of the perp:
It was a thin woman with reddish-blonde hair. She looked kind of strung out. She had her hair pulled back so I couldn't really say how long it was. I'd say she was anywhere from mid 40's to early 50's. She looked weathered. At the time she was wearing a hoodie - sort of purpleish

Is this the main part of Thorndike north of the bike path, or the little stub south of it?

On the north side, leading toward Holland? or the little dead end street to the South?

OK. Thanks for the clarification. Ron & I were confused because Thorndike actually extends a little bit past the bike path to Meacham Road. It's just a little dead end actually (though there's access to the bike path) with about 3 houses on each side.

I think people are talking about the main part of the street vs. the little stub on the other side of Howard: here. A 50-year-old woman breaking into houses? That's .... unusual, to say the least.

Meth makes you look old, fast. She's probably in her 30's or 40's.

there has actually been a string of break-ins and attempted break-ins in West Medford recently -- our house got hit; my bike got stolen but they didn't get into the house despite having an open window right next to a ground-floor accessible second-floor porch.

Wonder if its the same person -- whoever took my bike was a smoker and left butts on our back porch.

From neighbors I learned that a house on Packard Ave. was broken into a few months ago. "Cleaned 'em out" was the report.

And a personal note, my car has been broken into twice during the past six months on that street and a neighboring one. On the last occasion there were anecdotal reports of a high school kid in a hooded sweatshirt roaming around the street, presumably looking for GPS units to sell. I lost two iPod adapters in the latest one (they weren't visible) and I reported both car break-ins to the police.
