So I recently got into D&D (read: n00b), and I was wondering if there were any individuals/groups in the area that play as well. I went to a few tag sales this past weekend (and read a few posts on here), and realized there is potentially more than quite a few other geeks out there (not to mention YMG is like 2 seconds from my apartment).

Would there be anyone out there who would like to get something going, or perhaps already has something going that is willing to take in a 4e newb? Thanks!

You might have better luck, and less flaming, if you posted over at [livejournal.com profile] pandemonium_bks Pandemonium is a sci-fi/fantasy/gaming book store in Central Square that also has a downstairs area where people can meet to play lots of different kinds of games.

They might be good places for you to put up posters, though, saying that you are looking for like-minded players.

They also have games advertised there, and it's a pretty key place to meet other gamers (ditto Your Move).

Both Pandemonium and YMV have Living Forgotten Realms games -- not what you're looking for long term, but a good way to meet other D&D players. There's not actually a waiting list for those, but there's a signup list for each night, at least at Pandemonium. I don't know how YMV does it. Let me know if you want more info, although I bet that Eberron game someone mentioned would be a better fit. (Eberron rocks.)

I'm sorely tempted to let Tyler know that one of his employees was badmouthing 4e, because that's lousy customer service and every now and again I get annoyed at Pandemonium employees telling me they don't like my purchases. But I'll hold off. Sigh.

He needs to know. He can get register monkeys anywhere.

I meant that you would likely find more gamers that way and thus be able to schedule games, not that you'd have to go there to play. Sorry for the confusion.

Pretty sure that anyone who said that wasn't the owner. Pandemonium has certainly hosted 4th edition events; I'm not sure how often, but there's not an ideological ban on it or anything.

Pandemonium has 4th Edition games that run every Monday night, though there is a bit of a waiting list. You could ask the folks there to see if anyone has an opening in their home game.

The owner is this guy:

Note also the implied attitude towards 4th edition.

Yeah, I know that guy. His name's Tony. He's just a cashier. Nice guy, but a bit opinionated. Disregard.

I think you've mistaken "the guy at the register" for the owner - clearly they need to put up "cashier's opinion do not reflect those of Pandemonium Inc." signs ;P.

4 being extremely shitty doesn't make 3.5 not moderately shitty. Second forever!

If your focus is on the dice, then you would prefer the later editions!

I kid though. I think at this point the fact that 2nd is my favorite edition of a game system that is by now in all forms too gamist for my tastes doesn't actually do anything to recommend it.

Why would he be flamed for this post? There's nothing wrong with using this community to start a local activity group.

To keep in practice.

This is davis_square. Why wouldn't he be flamed? Or at least snarked at?

Because then the snarkers would get snarked at for being needlessly snarky.

It's a vicious snark circle.

Try posting in the bostongamers lj community too. Whenever someone posts it seems to be about something in cambridge.

I'm going to be running a short Eberron campaign this August. We'll be starting at 1st level, and most of the players are new to 4e, so another newbie wouldn't be a problem. I can check with my group and see if they'd mind an extra player -- how do Sundays work for you? That's pretty much the only day we're all able to meet as is.

Booo, I wish you'd posted this back when I was 10 yrs old and the geekboys wouldn't let me join their D&D games! I would have totally joined then!
... Incidentally, how did you get into it in this day and age? I'd like to join, but I fear I've long since outgrown anything requiring imagination.

While 3.5e is my drug of choice, they've made 4e really easy to get into, and if you can find a group of established players they'll make it easy on you. It's not really the sort of thing you outgrow, I've known of people to pick up the hobby in their 40s.

Seriously, why not get into it now? Join the bostongamers lj and yahoo groups and see what you can find?

Seconded. It's not at all hard to find gaming in the greater Boston area, in my experience.
