That would be my assumption - jackhammers don't generally come out at night unless it's absolutely necessary. And normally firetrucks are not party to construction, unless the fire department is getting in on the roadwork detail thing.
I passed by about an hour ago and they were painting a crosswalk on the road. It looked like there was smoke coming up out of the ground, but I don't know why (or what it would have been from).
There's a type of traffic marking decal that comes pre-cut like a sticker. They put it on the ground and use a big propane torch to melt it to the pavement. It can throw off smoke or steam if the pavement is dirty or wet. I've watched Somerville DPW doing this very thing from a restaurant window around 9pm, but it didn't involve the fire department.
