So, I'm walking up Holland away from Davis, and in that baseball park there there are a bunch of kids who appear to be handing out old fashioned orange life jackets. I'm curious, so I ask.

It turns out that they are part of "Operation Best Idea Ever" which it seems is to ride down the Charles in dingies.

Now, That sounds like fun, and it doesn't sound dangerous or anything, but "Best Idea Ever"? really? I mean, it's not a BAD idea per se, but I can think of many better ideas.

Also, it doesn't appear to have a web page. How can it be the best idea ever without a web page?

Well, if they are actually KIDS... they haven't had a whole lot of time.
I for one, had to stop reading and scratch my head for a few minutes to try and figure out what the heck a "live jacket" might be.
Then, I continued reading and figured it was just a typo. Tee hee.
Dingies, though? These are like rowboats, basically, yes? (http://www.petercrumpler.co.uk/The%20Sea/album/slides/Porthleven%20dingies.jpg) That is a pretty normal idea if you ask me. Are they maybe going for some sort of record?

edited to fix typo. ;)

They're just kids. It's cute. It's just a hook line, it doesn't have to literally be "the best idea ever". Seriously some of you are so cynical.
I rather see kids get involved in something like this and spend their free time handing out things, then to do the negative things too many other kids are up to.

That really *is* the best idea ever for the 4th of July!

If I read them right, it's $45 for a boat and one lifevest, etc, then another $25 to add a second person to the same boat with the other perks, which adds up to $70 and you have to be ready at 4pm, get everything from Davis to the river, then figure out what to do with all of it after.

Whereas I was in a rented canoe from the folks they link to with the implication that it costs a ton. The place provided the relevant equipment (including way more comfortable lifevests), put the boats in the water, and dealt with them as soon as we got back to shore. It was $70 for the two of us, and we were able to bicycle from Davis to the river, not have to carry much of anything, and didn't have to get there until around 7pm. (It was awesome and I'll write about it more in my LJ later.)

I'm not saying their idea is *bad* by any stretch, but it's not as much better than the other options as they imply.

I guess the question is whether mainstream vendors offer the same thing at the same price on July 4 - the "best idea ever" part of it seems to be specifically for the 4th, with the implication that other options are a lot costlier on that day even if not on other days.

Yes, I am talking about what I did on the the 4th -- thought that was clear. Charles River Canoe & Kayak has a 4th package that is priced as a package, as opposed to their usual rates which are hourly and don't run until 1am. :)

They might've been rafted up next to us on the Charles last night---that group fits your description.

definitely saw them last night. it was pretty adorable--they appeared all of a sudden and surrounded our canoe. my first thought was that they were MIT kids, but it was pointed out to me that MIT kids would have built their own vessels using found materials.

Why is it always assumed that something is no good if there isn't a web site? Are people that into their technology that nothing exists outside of their computer? There are people/groups who don't have web pages, but communicate via Facebook, MySpace, e-mail, etc. There are even other people who communicate Lord Save us, IN PERSON!! Hard to believe, but true!
