Hey,

I'm looking for a very small piece of lumber.  In particular I'm looking for an approximately 20" long piece of 1x6, preferably cedar but pretty much anything would do.  Does anyone happen to have some 1x6 lying around or know a place around here that I could pick up a piece of scrap?  If I went to Home Depot I'd have to pay for a full board, which is kinda silly when I only need 20".  I'm hoping someone has a piece lying around.  note:  Color doesn't matter, so even if it's already painted that's okay.

Thanks!

EDITED:  Wood obtained.  Thank you for all your suggestions.

You can probably get it at Tags. They have wood and plexiglas in the back that they can cut to size. They may also have planks of cedar for lining closets.

Home depot doesn't make you buy the whole board if you are buying hardwood. It's sold by the linear inch. Just get the saw guy to cut it.

If you want Cedar then go to Boulter Plywood (www.boulterplywood.com) over on Broadway (up by the freeway underpass over to Home Depot. They have a good selection of plain wood in addition to a great selection of plywoods. They also will cut and they can guarantee accuracy of the cut unlike HD.

Only with the softwoods since they are per piece. All of the trim, moldings, and hardwoods have been listed per foot for as long as I have been buying stuff from them* (probably close to 15 years) They may have a minimum shorts policy. Most yards will not let you leave too small of a piece since shorts are so hard to sell. You can have them cut 20" and tell the person at the register that you have a board of 1.67 feet and also make sure that the sku number (barcode label) is on the part that you have and not the cut off piece. If there is no barcode you can just write the sku down and tell the cashier. I do this all of the time if Boulter is already closed (a good probability since they keep really restrictive hours)

* HD is my last resort for buying wood since they store it wrong and the moisture content of their warehouses is so far off.

Boulter is a great place, and one of the regional best at marine plywood. They do often have cutoffs lying as well, so you might do well to look if you really want cedar.

Totally agreed! They also stock bending ply (all of the plys are oriented the same way) Paint grade anything is always hit or miss there since they really cater to the stain and varnish crowd. I got a load of paint grade birch there for a project and saved $10/sheet.

My favorite thing about them is that they guarantee their cuts to 1/32" of an inch so I can use them to do the finish cuts on large panels. My shop is too restrictive to make cutting large panels safe on my table saw.

I have a 2x6 piece of lumber (I believe it's pressure-treated pine) in my basement that you could have, so larger than you need but you're welcome to have it if you can use it. I'm located in East Arlington. You can email me at belinda3171 at yahoo if you're interested.

That would be resaw not rip :) Be careful of running pressure treated through sanders since the dust is pretty nasty due to all of the chemicals. After resawing you need to plane both sides parallel since it's very difficult to get it really good on a bandsaw with a resaw fence. Since one side is already flat then you can run it through a planer to get the other side parallel to it. If it's cupped you will need to use a sander to flatten one side first.

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware @ 2154 Massachusetts Ave in Cambridge (617) 497-1136 is a good bet. They're typically knowledgeable & helpful, and don't seem to mind hunting down a bit of scrap for small projects.

I thought they just closed their outlying location and kept the cambridge one?

Uh, I wouldn't suggest you go to Rockler for utility grade 1 x 6, either. I 2nd hapto's suggestion.

Home Depot also has a scrap bin (near the back of the store, two or three aisles from the left side as you walk in). When people have some wood cut at HD, the scrap pieces go into the scrap bin. Parts are color coded, so everything with a green dot is $0.50 or something like that.

If you can find what you need in the scrap bin, it's a great resource.

Any time. I'll message you with the address, leave the scrap in my foyer, and you can pick it up at your convenience in the next day or two.

PS, well it looks like there's no way to message you with LJ. (Strange, sometimes I'm able to message people, and other times not.) Please advise.

Ahem...
