Raves

Does Boston have anything resembling a raver scene nowadays? I have a friend (no, really!) who is interested in going to one but who hasn't been able to find anything like that at all. There are plenty of techno and goth nights, but nothing rave-ish that isn't on a college campus. Any suggestions on where some are held or what lists might announce them?

10+ years too late. Best to make it happen yourselves.

And remember that Boston is not a friend to anything that remotely resembles, or resembled at one time, anything subversive or underground.

Have fun!

I agree, do it yourself and it'll be a blast.

But I disagree about Boston. If you are talking about Boston *authorities*, then yeah. But that's true almost anywhere. But Boston as a city has plenty of crazy shit going on. You just have to look for it in the right places.

Well, there's Rise, although you'll have to become a member.

And there are various little collectives floating around... I think two are called "Firefly" and "Sonic Beating" but I could be wrong about that. Most of it is in one way or another related to tribes that go out to Burning Man every year and have parties in the interim.

I can't vouch for this since I've never seen them, but I have heard excellent things about Sonic Beating, who are is moving this year to the Machine:

Psyforia is a monthly Saturday trance night that's been at machine for a little over a year. I've been a few times and thoroughly enjoyed it. There's also a weekly "rave" night on Tuesdays in Providence at Club Energy that's pretty small.

There are a lot of raver events that happen in the greater New England area as well, Boston not being the friendliest place for it. Anything that Tight Crew (http://www.tightcrew.net/) is involved in is guaranteed to be a blast.

Not necessarily a rave (particularly due to the small size), but still in the spirit is the Dancing on the Charles. I just started going this year, but they happen several times each summer. It can be hit or miss depending on the DJs but it's always a good time. It's outdoors at the Gerry's Landing VFW Post. I've seen some pretty amazing dancers and DJs this year...

I totally forgot about this! Thanks for reminding me. I had a lot of really great times there around 4 years ago and then lost track.

In regards to mistresshellena's statement:
"And remember that Boston is not a friend to anything that remotely resembles, or resembled at one time, anything subversive or underground"

I so disagree. There is a lot happening here. You just need to make the effort to go past the college frat boy veneer...and you shall find it, ...there is plenty of alternative shit going on...
