So my company is providing me with a car which I bring home every night and keep on weekends, etc.

I can't find much about getting a permit for one of these on Somerville's website. Anyone have experience with this situation?

My work is not in Somerville, so it is registered out of town.

I think you are going to have a hard time getting a permit.

To obtain a residential sticker you must present a current, valid Mass registration showing Somerville, MA as the principal place of garaging.

I just went through this as well - hope you have off-street parking, 'cause if that car isn't registered in your name, you won't be able to get a permit for it.

I have a lease so my registration does not show my name as the "owner" it shows the cars leasing company as the registration name. When I went to get the sticker I had to bring my lease contract showing it was being garaged in Somerville at my residence. Maybe you could get something similiar?

yeah, i'm not sure about somerville (so good luck) but i know someone who when he had a company car had a spot that came with his apartment, so it was no big deal. but he couldn't get a permit for himself or in that case more importantly, guests. sucked!

You can buy a Cambridge visitor permit without owning a car, so why was visitor parking an issue for this person?

as far as i know you can only have x number (1 even, maybe) per household. which is shitty imo, when we're living in a place where i'd wager more people than not have roommates.

You don't need the car registered in your name. Many people have leased cars not registered in their name and have permits. But you would need to amend the registration to show Somerville as the principal place of garaging. This may require changes to the car's insurance, as well, as rates between cities differ. Check with your company. If they're OK, apply for an amended registration, or let your company apply for it, and you should be all set.

Can you expense a garage/driveway spot?

I second progressnerd's comments about the garaging. Your company could be in hot water if you ever had an accident and the insurance was based on the car spending most nights in a low-risk suburb; i.e. insurance company might not pay out. So you might want to follow up on this if they haven't changed the insurance to Somerville already.

On the other hand, isn't there some sort of permit that's intended for contractors to use on their vehicles to do work in Somerville? I remember it being much more expensive than the normal permit but something like this exists. However, I don't know if they are valid overnight.

PS. Does this car have commercial plates? I know there's something about not being able to park commercial vehicles overnight, but don't know if it's any vehicle with commercial plates ( i.e. Zipcars, and many small businessmen's personal cars ) or only trucks.
