well, not desperately.... i'm looking for a secondhand/vintage prom dress, ideally a satiny pastel one with a floofy skirt. i'm going to a fan convention in october and we're having a prom, theme "zombie apocalypse". i don't want to be a zombie, i just want to wear a prom dress. :D the one i wore to my own prom no longer fits and in fact it probably went to goodwill years ago, and because this is going to be a one-off event, i don't want to spend tons of money on a new prom-ish dress.

i've been to poor little rich girl and oona's (i need to go back to oona's when it's not super crowded), and i want to try the garment district, but i'm not sure where else to look. would the davis square goodwill be worth a try? what other secondhand/vintage clothes stores might be good for old prom dresses?

Garment District will solve everything.

*g* I'm sharp like that! Hee! Anyway, I've never had much luck at the Davis Square Goodwill. I second the recommendation of the Garment District - they really do have a little bit of everything!

Interesting. Hm.

I don't think I'll be going, but have fun, and I will look forward to hearing about it later!

Goodwill has its moments, but it's really hit or miss. I bought my wedding dress at the Garment District (100% silk for $30, tags still on it).

I have a prom dress that you can borrow for as long as you'd need - it's satiny black with a boned bodice embroidered with gold and has a biiiiig fluffy skirt with lots of tulle. I'd have to check the size, but let me know if you'd like it!

Boomerang's in JP would be a good place to check for these, too!

If you are in Davis anyway, it wouldn't hurt to take a few minutes to go through the dresses at Goodwill. I have seen (and bought) some great dresses there when I was looking for costumes. The Goodwill in Central has also served me will on the dress/costume front. And overall, Goodwill is much cheaper than Garment District.

Be different.

Go to the prom without a prom dress. Why not?

Would you suggest wearing anything else?

you might also try Second Time Around. They have stores in Harvard sq and beacon hill. I've seen them other places in the area, but I can't recall exactly where.

what size? I have a lavender satin and crinoline one I bought for fabric that's been hanging in the bathroom for a year. it's now 'ruined' because I got a drop of red hair dye on it (looks like blood, actually), but that'd be fine for being surrounded by zombies, I think ;-)

I *think* it's a size twelve. but it's hard to tell with prom dresses. I'm by Porter square.

(which is to say, if you want to give it a whirl and see if it fits you, you're free to, and can have it. if it doesn't no loss but a little time)

I was just at the Garment District and they have a million prom dresses -- some pretty hideous stuff. Get over there before the students return and take all the poofy ones.

The Davis Goodwill has a lot of stuff like this, and probably better prices.
