I've been job hunting for the last 2 weeks (Damn lay-offs. Damn them.), and every job I've applied to was either in Cambridge or Boston. I didn't see even one corporate listing in Somerville, at least not in my job category. But I do see what look like office workers here during the day. I've never been inside the handful of office buildings in or around Davis, and I was thinking of popping in to see what companies/organizations occupy them so I could check their websites' career pages. But I thought I'd ask here: does anyone know of any corporate entities or healthy non-profits based in the greater Davis area? Being in administration I can work in lots of industries. Just curious if any of you work an office job in Davis, or know someone who does.

Candlewick Press, a publisher of children's books, is in the big one-story building behind the Somerville Theatre (where Share Group used to be)

TERC, a non-profit educational research organization, is in the Henderson Carriage Building on Mass. Ave. between Porter and Davis squares.

I can't think of an appropriate tag. Make up a new one (maybe 'jobs' ?). You are still on the list of people who are allowed to create new tags.

Somerville Homeless Coalition is in the CVS/Boston Sports Club building.
Amnesty International's Northeast Regional Office at 58 Day Street (the Post Office building)
Part of Lesley University is in the old Sears (Porter Exchange) building in Porter Square.

If you look at Lesley you'll probably also want to look at Tufts (and maybe Harvard, though that's getting away from our neighborhood)

Up the street on Holland, over Sabur, there's Hostelling International. I've always wondered, well, why they're housed over a Mediterreanean restaurant.

Generally speaking Somerville is an extremely residential city - there are just not as many businesses in this city as in Cambridge or in Boston.

architects: one of which is Mostue and Associates, across from Redbones.

(I have no contacts there, sorry. I know them only because I once found some mail addressed to them on the Red Line platform, and I redelivered it to them.)

I'm really sorry for the off-topic comment, but I went to read your lj and your latest post touched me deeply. I can't comment there because you don't allow comments from non-friends.

I don't mean to pass judgments or discount your kindness in any way, but here's something I hope more people learn: when you see a child who's seemingly lost _do not move him from the spot he's at_. Talk to him if you must, but don't move him. His mother is going to look for him, and the first place she's going to look for is where she saw him last (or where she told him to be). If you take him with you somewhere, especially as far as downstairs into the T, you are greatly reducing chances of the speedy reunion and you are making everybody's life difficult in the process -- both the life of the mother, who's likely to die inside ten times over every minute she doesn't see the child and the life of the child who's less likely to see his mom quickly.

If you are worried that the mother is not going to come quickly enough, then wait. Just stay for 10 minutes with him -- if no mom in 10 minutes, then consider looking for the police. Otherwise, just let the parents do their job and find the kid. Also consider this: as cruel as it may seem to let the child continue crying, while he is crying, his mom is more likely to hear him and to find him quicker.

Once again, sorry for this unasked for comment, but please next time if you are in a similar situation, think twice before moving the child somewhere. And I do hope the mother was screaming at him for having followed a stranger. Because you never know who's going to pretend to be a helpful Mary next time.

There's a marketing firm in the depths of East Somerville, Grossman Marketing.

http://www.grossmanmarketing.com/

I wonder if in that Inner Belt region there are more office-type places. While wandering around there once picking up a package at the crazy FedEx outpost, I saw a lot of office-type buildings.

I know there are a bunch of businesses/non-profits in the building on 48 Grove St. (next to the College Ave. T exit)--if you google maps it, it'll give you a potential list of businesses (don't know who is actually there)...

Good luck!

Mt. Auburn Associates, an economic consulting firm, is or used to be right in the square, basically above Mike's. I had a friend who interviewed there once.

The Citizens Bank building (212 Elm Street) across from the Rosebud houses:

Citizens Bank (of course)
Arrowstreet, Inc. (architecture firm, who I believe are not hiring currently)
Powderhouse Productions (video stuff?)
a software? company that used to be called Spotfire but has another name I don't remember at this point
CBA Landscape Architects (where I work, though we're not hiring currently)
and there's a web design(?) firm about to move in to part of the fourth floor in mid-September, but I don't know the name of it yet.

It's not in Davis, but the Census Bureau (downtown) is hiring. I know we don't have a lot of postings open right now, but if you keep an eye on usajobs.gov, there should be more soon, including some admin ones.

A couple other local architects are Mostue and Associates (across from Redbones) and Charles Rose Architects (on Willow near the bike path). I don't think either are hiring administrative type staff right now, but might be worth checking in on. Design firms are more likely to advertise openings on their websites than on job boards. There are some smaller firms down near Union Square - Kao Design Group near the Market Basket and Ground (landscape architecture) in Union. And Moshe Safdie is also in Somerville, not so close to Davis, but close to . . . whatever that intersection is that isn't Inman, though it's on the way there, but has the Wine & Cheese Cask on the corner.

Also, the Boston Society of Architects job board (http://www.architects.org/classifieds/list_classifieds.cfm) has administrative positions of various sorts from time to time. Not that they've had so many postings of any kind in about a year. /bitterness

That's Bank of America (formerly BayBank), which I didn't know had a fourth floor or any other businesses.
Never mind, BofA is 406 Highland.
