There is an Indian grocery store in Central Square (Shalimar). There is also a Chinese grocery store at Mass Ave and Prospect in Central and a Korean one closer to Boston on Mass Ave, also near Central. For Asian, people seem to swear by Super88 but they are further out and I've never been to one. For Latin American, there's one at Hampshire and Columbia in Cambridge as well as some more around Broadway/Windsor and Harvard St.
There's Kotobukiya in the Porter Exchange Mall (expensive!) and Yoshinoya on Prospect off Mass Ave. in Central Square (more expensive!)
Reliable Market in Union Square is New England's largest Korean market.
Chinatown is the best place to buy Asian groceries. There's two Super 88s (the main one on Herald Street, and a smaller on on...Essex, I think), C-Mart, and many smaller ones. It's really not all that inconvenient to shop in Chinatown; I do it all the time. It's just what, 6 or 7 stops on the Red Line? That's not bad at all.
There is (was?) a huge carribean store called Tropical Foods off Melnea Cass Blvd and Washington - across the river, good if you have a car. They sell bulk dried goods and cheap fresh produce (both green and ripe plantains) and general produce and is in general not expensive.
There are a variety of other latin/carribean (I know, they aren't necessarily the same) stores sprouting up in Somerville that have small selections, but carry staples for latin cooking that you don't get as easily at star.
