Has anyone had any trouble using the Brown discount card at any of the places that supposedly accept it? My boyfriend tried using his at Dunkin Donuts yesterday, and they first claimed they didn't honor it, and then proceeded to try and swipe it like a credit card.

Is DD a lost cause? Do Sacco's, Dave's, Somerville Theater, Blue Shirt, Diva, Mr. Crepe, and Red Bones know the deal? Any insight/previous experience would be much obliged.

On a side note, does anyone feel bad about using this at the local businesses? Do they eat the price discount, or are they compensated somehow?

I used last year's card at Blue Shirt all the time. Mmm, discounted smoothies.

Presumably they are not blanking their profit margins, or even close to, and expect to make it up in extra traffic.

And on use: Never tried the DDs, never had problems and used it most other places listed.

Also I expect the discount they gave me for using the card was counterbalanced by my increased chance of smoothie consumption ;). So no guilt for me.

i have used it all the places you have mentioned (excluding DD) and have never had a problem using it. and I know for me, i have bought more at Dave's because I had the discount, and bowled at all at sacco's because of the free shoe rental, so i think it helps them by bringing people in.
I usually just say "i have the brown school card" and show it to them, and they apply the discount

In past years, I've used my cards at Mr. Crepe, Dave's Fresh Pasta, and Blue Shirt without any problem at all.

I used my card at Dunkin Donuts on the day I bought it (September 4). Did he press the issue? Show the text on the back where the deal is stated? Ask for a manager?

(You were at the DD in Davis, right?)

I use mine regularly at Mr Crepe, Blue Shirt and Rudy's, and have never had a serious problem. If it's a new worker, they may never have seen the card before, but that's usually cleared up quickly. I've never tried it at DD.

To the best of my knowledge, they eat the price discount, but it gets made up for in increased sales. Same with the restaurant.com coupons, except that those don't have the charitable cause behind them.

I wouldn't feel guilty. The Brown School Card (when I had one) got me to places I wouldn't have gone to on my own, so they got money (albeit discounted) from someone whom they otherwise otherwise wouldn't have gotten money from at all.

i've used it no problem at redbones and at the somerville theatre. well the only problem i've ever had was being confused at the final redbones bill due to not noticing the discount had decreased one year.

it was still awesome. :)

I assume the businesses don't do this to increase profits but rather to support the Brown School. You can think of your discount as being a small donation from the business to the Brown School.

Where can I get a Brown School card? Is Mr. Crepe still selling them? (There should probably be a brown_school_card tag.)

Hello, Brown School parent here :-)

According to the flyer I got from the PTA, it says the cards can be purchased from Mr Crepe "throughout the school year." Of course, I am selling them too, but getting to Mr Crepe will be easier for the LJ community.

I used the Brown Card at the DDs there last Tuesday, around 10:30 pm, to buy a frozen thing. The guy had no problems with it; I just showed him the front and he didn't look any further, just gave me the discount.

It can be a minor hassle using the card when you're getting takeout at Redbones, because the server has to find a manager to put the discount through, but they've always been fine with it. Otherwise, I've had no problems - the places I know I've used it are Blue Shirt, Pemberton Farms (garden center), Dave's and Mr. Crepe.

I use it routinely at Mr. Crepe, to the point where some of the cashiers know that I have it and don't even ask to see it. The Somerville Theatre is also quite familiar with the card.

Why would you feel bad about using it at a local place, being on the Brown Card is advertising for them? Let alone I doubt Mr Crepe feels bad about charging you over 6$ for a chocolate banana crepe - there is nothing wrong with saving money when presented the option.
