I saw a few details about the prospective new restaurant going into the Carberry's/O'Naturals/Boloco/Green Tomato space and it sounds promising to me. It will be a "wood fired pizzeria and wine bar" called Posto.  The owner/chef lives locally in Somerville (off Cedar St) and has worked at a lot of top Boston restaurants (ran the kitchen at Mistral, ran Stella in the south end, exec chef at L'Andana in Burlington). It sounds like he and his wife have dreamed about opening their own place, and this place will be their first. From what I understand, the interior will be reconfigured completely including tables, a bar area, and private dining space. Farewell to the kiddie play area with the trains (my daughter will be devastated). Also some 2-tops outside on Elm st. Entrees (mainly gourmet pizzas) in the $15 vicinity. 11am - 11pm hours, so we're not talking about a late night bar scene.

I would expect that all of this hinges on the outcome of the wine and beer license application which comes up on Sept 30 at the licensing board. I am pretty ignorant of the licensing process, but I hope these guys are approved (unlike, say Ten Tables which bailed on Davis due to failure to obtain a wine and beer license).

What's a "2-top" ?

When Ten Tables wanted a license, there were far more applicants than licenses available, so they weren't able to proceed. The state has now granted the city of Somerville additional licenses.

It's really hard to get a liquor license in Camberville.

Less true now than it used to be, since the state granted Somerville additional licenses to hand out. These new licenses are non-transferable; if the business closes, the license goes back to the city.

If that's the case I kind of hope they don't waste a perfectly good license on the Location of Doom!

Isn't there also an upscalish pizza place planned for opening at the Sacco's location?

Yes, I believe Flatbread Company already received their license.

Is that the same joint that's out of Burlington, Vermont?

No, that's American Flatbread. The one we're getting is Flatbread Company.

Apparently the two restaurants are related though:

This history is confusing, but the impression I get is that one company separated into two, and the two companies eventually decided to divide up territory and avoid competing with each other as they expanded.

sounds interesting, I just hope it lasts longer than the last 4-5 attempts at that location...

Yeah, gotta wish them the best of luck for taking over the Location of Death. I hope the food is good enough to compel people to make that "long" walk out of Davis!

if they reconfigure it

to break up the booming acoustics, they have a chance.

the combination of such amplified acoustics with trying to make the place "kid-friendly" pretty much made the place "adult-unfriendly" all the time.

(Sabra & Orleans managed to break their cursed locations.)

oops.

*hopes* My favorite place in Denver was a really bizarrely decorated bar right next to an unremarkable, hole-in-the-wall pizza place - they had the same owner, and there was a door between the two, so you could sit in the weird-ass bar, drink, and get pizza delivered from next door :)

You know, that location might work a lot better as a place with a wine/liquor license. There are hundreds of people in a quarter mile of the place who might like to pop in for a casual drink and pizza. The next nearest places are either in davis or the far end of porter.

I still miss the bolloco.

This all goes back to when Bertuccis left- maybe putting a new pizza place in will finally lift the curse!

I bet they won't have bocce, though.

And before it was Mr. Crepe, it was Mr. Plow.

Apparently from what I was reading on the DS Task Force email the neighbors don't want it here, but don't ask me to quote chapter and verse because I think it came out while I was on vacation, thus, I already deleted the email.

Some neighbors don't want it, mostly due to complaints about the property owner allegedly failing to honor agreements about trash, parking, fences, and the like. I think those issues can be worked out.

I was at the Davis Square Task force meeting...no one was outwardly against it except some people seem to prefer no more liquor licenses in Davis. The idea is a more upscale trattoria, with a lot of small plates as well as Neapolitan pizzas. The sample menu looked amazing. I personally think that although there are a lot of great restaurants, the area is lacking in more upscale options. The licensing board is meeting September 30 to decide, and the more people that show up to support them getting a license, the better!
