Defiiling with a kiss
Oct. 22nd, 2004 02:22 pmThe campaign to sticker-in lame duck Vinny Ciampa as 34th Middlesex District representative in the Mass House has taken a really weird twist, as an anti-gay group in Waltham has gotten involved. Article 8 Alliance accuses successfully elected Rep Carl Sciortino with a litany of crimes, among the most heinous of which would seem to be that he defiled a church in Boston by *gasp* holding hands with his lover and kissing him!!! To quote a Phoenix story on the campaign:
The Article 8 Alliance, a Waltham-based organization fiercely opposed to gay marriage, issued a press release this week calling Sciortino a "militant homosexual activist" whose support came mostly from people outside the district. The flier features a 2003 photo of Sciortino holding hands with his partner in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross as part of a larger demonstration protesting the Catholic Church’s anti-gay-marriage stance. Around the photo, black type warns, "He defiled the cathedral in Boston ... and now he’s about to defile our State House!"
... Sciortino takes particular issue with Article 8’s description of what happened at that protest. The press release says he kissed his partner in church; Sciortino says, "That is a complete misrepresentation of what went on and is a lie." But for Article 8 president Brian Camenker, the details are insignificant in light of the seriousness of the act. "It was a hate crime by any sense of the word," he says. "Not only that, but it was calculated to disrespect the church. It was an insult, a defilement."

Date: 2004-10-22 01:32 pm (UTC)Interesting thing... at the polling site I went to for the primaries, it was pretty easy to tell the difference between the volunteers for each campaign. Ciampa's sign-holders were middle to retirement aged women who came with lawn chairs. Sciortino's were a mix, but leaning a little more to 20- and 30-something professionals who did not have seats. Not sure that it says anything outside of that one site, but it was very striking at the time.
