As a frequent reader and occasional poster, I thought I'd pass this along.

If you missed other runs, Jim's Big Ego (and company) return for an October residency. (Am going to see it again.)

After the initial production in '06 ah42 said, "Good show. Three thumbs up."

Oct 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

"The Ego and the Oracle"
6:30pm doors / 7pm show
Back Room at The Burren
Davis Square, Somerville
All Ages, but best suited for mature audiences
$15

From the site:

Part improvisational theater, part rock & roll cabaret, part audience participation, The Ego & The Oracle is a live stage spectacular where "Ouija Board meets iPod Shuffle".

Audience members are invited on stage to ask personal questions of The Oracle. They then spin a giant wheel containing songs by Boston band, Jim's Big Ego.

When the wheel stops, the band spontaneously performs the chosen song, which afterward is interpreted as the answer to the question. The outcome can be humorous or moving, often both at once.

The Ego & The Oracle is a show about synchronicity and it's hard to experience it without getting the sense that the universe is not only in tune, but that it also has a great sense of rhythm.

Also, if you go to this show, you may see [livejournal.com profile] hahathor or [livejournal.com profile] cthulhia or both on stage.

I believe [livejournal.com profile] cthulhia will be acting as our lovely Vanna Black for all shows. I'll be doing the interpretation on October 8 and 22, while Shawn Peters (who isn't on LJ so far as I know) will interpret the 1, 15, and 29. Having seen Shawn I can vouch that he's great, and it's different when he does it. I recommend seeing both of us so you can compare and contrast.

Of course, since the show is (by its very nature) different every time, you should just come to all five shows.

I've seen it a couple of times and it really is a great show.

If you haven't been, go see it!

Since it's said that it's "on the heels of another sold out run" is this something one buys tickets for? Or is it first come, first serve?

The show is in the back room of the Burren, and there's limited seating (though we have sold plenty of standing room tix). I'd recommend getting there early-ish. The show starts at 7, and doors open at 6:30. I think for all but the last show, getting to the Burren by 6:30 was sufficient to get you a seat at a table - but at the final show there was already a line out down the hallway & out to the street. It was like people camping out for a Dead show or something! And so even people who were arriving at about 6:30 weren't guaranteed seats.

It's the Burren, so once you get your seat you can get a beer, or order food, and there's good music playing, so it's not like that half hour is going to be unpleasant or anything...

Oh definitely not unpleasant! Just making sure that I wasn't showing up at 6:30 only to be let down because I hadn't bought tickets from some mysterious location :) Looking forward to it!

I just emailed the producer to see if there is a procedure in place for presales (or if we can put one in place), given the popularity last time. I was very disappointed that people weren't able to make the show who wanted to; but I gotta admit I kinda felt like a rock star (or auxiliary rock star, Jim's the real rock star) seeing that line stretching out to the street.

So it's kind of silly, but I grew up in Western MA, and happened to see Jim's Big Ego play in Northampton in the mid 90's. I got the cd, with him in front of the window of Someday Cafe, and just had it for a while. I then moved to Somerville in 2002, not really knowing anything aside from that I was getting a room in a house near the train so I could get to my new job in downtown. That was Cameron Ave, and it totally blew my mind when I walked into the square that I'd actually moved by chance into the neighborhood of that very recognizable cafe. It's a small world. I haven't seen them perform since then, so I feel this is somewhat of a closing of the circle ;)

That's a great story! If you come one of the days when I'm interpreting (the 8th or 22nd), I'll make a point of finding you & introducing you to Jim so you can tell it to him yourself. If you come another day, you should just go up & introduce yourself.

We should go together! I meant to see the last run, but was late and encountered the aforementioned line out the door. Also, I happen to be personally acquainted with both Rockstar [livejournal.com profile] hahathor and Rockstar [livejournal.com profile] cthulhia and I would like to bask in their combined rockstariness.
