This may sound discouraging...But charitable organizations often get so many volunteers between Thanksgiving and Christmas that they don't know what to do with all of them.
But hunger isn't just during the holidays, and food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters need volunteers all year around!
Let me put in a plug for Food For Free (http://www.foodforfree.org), where I've been volunteering once a week for over a year. Also, Project Bread (http://www.projectbread.org/help.html) can use volunteers all the time, as can the Somerville Homeless Coalition. (http://www.somervillehomelesscoalition.org/helpvolu.html)
But if you're looking for a single three-hour stint on Thanksgiving day, it may be hard to come by.
