Hi Everyone,

I just moved here and have a few questions about the neighborhood.

I noticed there are a few sushi restaurants in Davis Square, would anyone care to give me a recommendation?

I have been a nanny for the last 3 years in Portland for two small children under 5.  Is there an agency for nannies in Somerville or is anyone looking for help?

My references  and English are excellent and I can start right away.

Thank you,
Yi

My personal vote for sushi goes to Yoshi's, on College Ave. just south of Powderhouse Circle.

I also really liked Snappy Sushi when a friend brought me there.

Snappy Sushi, it should be mentioned, uses brown rice. Definitely a bit of a surprise.

I've dropped a pointer to this post to friends who may be looking for a nanny. They are Orthodox Jews and it's both Shabbat and a major Jewish holiday through Sunday night, so you wouldn't hear from them before Monday. (They are very observant; separate set of dishes for everything.)

My emphatic vote goes to Hana Sushi on Mass Ave, as much as I'd love to love Snappy more because of the brown rice.

(When my sushi snob friend from San Francisco was in town and he wanted some, we walked into Snappy and the fishy smell was overwhelming (though that isn't always the case). He took a look at the goods behind the counter and said we weren't eating there, so I took him to Hana which he really enjoyed. Plus you can have a drink with your meal.)

ok, this isn't exactly in Davis, but if you're willing to bike 15 minutes or drive 5, Toraya in Arlington is some of the best sushi in the whole Boston area. It's on Mass Ave, across from the high school.

Toraya is wonderful. Great quality, simple preparation and just perfect.

Snappy sushi is all brown rice?!? so I personally hate them

i've never been to Yoshi, but I have heard good things

Hana hasn't been the same since the ownership change 2 years ago

New Ginza in watertown (bike or drive) is quite good; especially for rolls.

Getting on the T to coolidge corner in Brookline brings you near Fugakyu (great rolls, ok Nigiri). There is also Haru, Tsunami and another that are all decent.

blue fin in porter square (T ride) is ok. They do decent cooked and they do have a wasabi root roll that is nice.

if you bike to lexington (on the bike path)http://calendar.boston.com/lexington-ma/venues/show/589028-daikanyama-japanese-cuisine is really good. The owner took a few of the best chefs from Fugakyu.

Oishii is still good, they are in the south end - though they seem to have gotten a little bit full on winning awards year after year. If you drive, their chestnut hill location is still the best and the Sudbury location is good too.

I'd definitely recommend trying the rolls at Snappy before dismissing them for the high-quality rice they use. The brown rice is nice and nutty and goes really, really well with unagi and some of the wacky korean-style rolls they specialize in.

For nigiri, though, I'd go for Toraya or, my god, O Ya.

I have eaten at snappy - brown rice has a texture that mushes with the fish leaving the feeling in my mouth very off. The fish was only ok quality so for the texture and price I personally would rather wallk to someplace else. But if you don't mind texture - so yes if you have never been it is worth, at least, one try.

O ya is pretty special and I have had 2 very good meals there but, for the cost, omakasi at oishii on a Tuesday or Thursday (non busy night) still can't be beat.

Yeah, I'll agree with that, generally. Their rice is better with veggie rolls (their avocado rolls are, oddly, some of the best I've had) and eel, not delicate fish.

I'll definitely keep Oishii's omakase in mind!

Snappy's brown rice tastes better than other places Ive tried, but it still isn't that great and doesn't pair well with fish (in my own opinion, of course). Other issues I had with the place are the cost and the fact that the rice didn't stick very well.

I am a HUGE fan of Snappy Sushi. Very strongly recommend them--they mill their own brown rice!

I second that. I get takeout from there so much they know my order!

Sittercity.com is free for babysitters and nannies to sign up and there are daily posts by parents looking for childcare in the area.

care.com is also great & free. boston nanny centre is free for nannies, too, and they get you paid time off & benefits.

Snappy Sushi's great -- their brown rice goes really well with their signature roll, the Newbury Fashion Roll. They also used to be ridiculously cheap, but not so much anymore. Still, they're great and casual. Also recommended: the ika squid salad.

My favorite Sushi place around here

I actually like Jae's a lot for sushi (multiple locations in boston and brookline), in part because you can also get pad thai :D

Fugakyu is great. There is this fancy-ish place in Beacon hill that is expensive but worth it (the name escapes me).

I'm not too fussy in general. There is a sushi counter in the porter exchange which is fairly OK and very cheap, so I end up there usually by default (it's the closest to me as well :)

I like their spider rolls a lot. It is associated with the Japanese store that moved, I think.

mayyyyybe, i'm not sure if it still is... i think they changed their name?

The Jae's in Brookline is changing to Buddhachen, curious to see if it's better:
http://www.buddachen.com/

There was recently a groupon for the Beacon Hill location, I already forgot the name too because it didn't sound worth the money. Fugakyu and Oishii are worthy of the cost! except that the latter charged us a "cake cutting" fee of $5 per person when we went there with our own birthday dessert my friend was enamored with- turned into a $50 Whole Foods cake, wtf :(

I'm not a fan of the snappy or the hana, I'd rather go cheap at the Porter Exchange which has all kinds of places inside it. Or, of probable interest to the poster- check out the Super 88 in Allston for all your asian-inspired grocery and eating needs, it has a free parking lot and a Lollicup tea shop!

Chopsticks down, my favorite affordable sushi place has got to be the Genki Ya on Harvard Ave in Brookline. It's all organic! Small place and usually packed, but awesome service and huge portions of quality. Lots of different rolls, veggie and cooked too :)
