STOLEN BICYCLE

My bike was stolen tonight (Sunday, October 11th) from behind the Davis T Station between 12:30 pm and 6:15 while I was at Honk. It is a green 2009 Diamondback Vital 1 with a u-lock mount below the seat (no u-lock though...it's in my possession). I have filed a police report. Thank you. Since tomorrow is my birthday, I appreciate the thoughtfulness of the gift of sadness this jerk decided to give me.

Thank you. I have all proper documentation should you see anything. Few bike stores have carried this exact make/model/color so if you do see it, odds are it's mine.

How did you have it locked? I ask because it looks from your picture that you have a U-Lock and a cable (?) which is what I use, and I had my bike parked in the same area for an even longer amount of time and worried every now and then that my bike might be stolen, because let's face it, this weekend was probably a good time for bike thieves.

Of course there's no foolproof way to lock a bike, but your story might motivate me to purchase one of those huge-ass chains.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear this. I hope your birthday turns out well anyway, despite that loser.

U-locks are really easy to pick, actually, you can usually do it with a pen, so get a nice chain, I think.

The old kryptonite locks with the round keys are easy to pick; the new ones that have "I" keys are not. The locks to use are the Kryptonite EVOLUTION series, that has the orange lock piece. The website details what type of crime areas specific locks are recommended for:

That used to work. Kryptonite changed the construction of their locks shortly after that flaw was discovered, and created an exchange program by which people can return the old locks for new ones.

I did have it locked, but it retrospect I messed up in doing so and did not get it around the frame. A rookie mistake. I have a Kryptonite Series 2 U-lock (the mount for it is below the seat and still attached to the bike...possibly) but did not use the cable yesterday.

I was an easy steal by my own locking error (I have the lock and the wheel still) but at the same time you would like to think that some jerk wouldn't come along, unscrew your wheel and walk off with most of your bike.

In your case, I think you will be ok as long as you properly lock it all. Definitely insure the bike and be aware that thieves are out there, even in pure daylight on a busy day.
