hi, everybody. i was wondering about bike stores in the porter/davis area...i know there are several. i'm looking to get a bike just for some casual weekend riding. i can't afford much on account of my low-paying nonprofit job, so i'm looking for something at around $200 or possibly even less. any suggestions? does anyone have any reviews of the bicycle exchange?

i really like the guys at paramount bicycle in powderhouse circle. i've never actually purchased a bike from them, but i've gotten a variety of supplies there, and they're always really cool. i'm pretty damn sure they've got bikes for ~$200.

i got my bike for $3 at the newton recycling transfer center and am really happy with it.

I second the yes vote for Paramount. It caters to the casual cyclist and does its best to make prices reasonable. Plus the owner [Tyler] rocks.

Glad you like the icon. ;)

If you're looking for cheap-as-in-free bikes in the Cambridge area, it can be worth checking out the Harvard Junkyard. It's on North Harvard Street past the stadium/fields. At the end of the semester/school year, Harvard rounds up bikes that have been left laying about. Many are in good/fair condition and those that are not can give up parts for other bikes. While you might not be able to ride the bike of the lot, it'd be a lot cheaper to just refurbish it than to buy a new one.

I don't think there's much there now (my office is across the way from it). Your best bet is at the end of semesters and over the summer. Currently, I see a few desks and some ratty dorm mattresses most of the time.

I was surprised about how close to reality my war in Davis post was when I saw the pictures of Sox fans outside the theatre this week. All we needed was a tank or two and it'd been perfect!

I like Ace Wheelworks at Elm & Willow, but they might not have anything in your price range.

I really liked Ace Wheelworks, but I only have used them for bike repair. Now, a friend of mine got a road bike "as-is" for $99, which was fine. (until he destroyed it, but that's another story... :)

You might want to go there and see what they've got for used bikes, and see if anything is in your price range.

I don't think they sell used. They have old-as-in-overstock-from-last-year, and they have some substantially discounted stuff at the Annex in Belmont (but generally discounted higher-end), but I don't think they have actual used bikes.

Ah, really? I guess his bike was just REALLY cheap then :) Thanks for the correction.

I thought the Somerville Ace Wheelworks had used bikes sitting outside the store. They looked fairly used. I think the Belmont one doesn't sell used bike though.

you are correct. somerville ace definitely sells used bikes and they generally are on display in front of the store.

When I walked by them the other day, they had a few old bikes in front for less than $200. No real idea of what kind of condition they were in.

Hey there :
I've been riding an old three speed recently and haven't used my other bike in quite a while. If you are interested in purchasing it let me know. It's an older Schwinn High Plains Hybrid. It has 21 speeds, knobby tires and is in pretty good shape. Just let me know if you want more info.

As far as a good bike shop goes I vote for Ace Wheel Works.
