I am looking for something fairly specific in a bookshelf--square openings, not terribly shallow--for craft and office storage. I can get what I want at Ikea (4x4 Expedit, basically) but it would be pretty darn heavy to lug up to the 3rd floor and pretty immovable once it was assembled. Aside from the unfinished furniture place that is roughly behind Porter Square near Beacon St, what are my local options? I have a car and I can go get it, delivery would be fairly nice.

I was reading good things on Yelp about Eddie's (the place roughly behind Porter Square on Elm St) and I'd love to hear more about them, or other places around here.

The first one you mentioned is The Bookcase Factory Outlet

I've had a few great experiences with Eddie's. You should know that Eddie also owns Metamorphosis on Mass Ave near Harvard - it's just another version of the same store. Also, you said you had a car, but they do free delivery in Somerville in case it doesn't fit in your car. I found them to be reasonably priced, with high-quality, unique goods that are for the most part refurbished rather than brand new, and they deliver on time.

I found bookcase factory outlet cheaper (by, like, $4) than Edie's when i bought my cubes, so call for prices. The shelves, the best I can tell, are identical.

Rodney's Books in Central Square sells 'em too. I don't know how prices compare. I know from experience that they deliver.

The Mill Stores have a *huge* selection of unfinished furniture. Really worth checking out. Their closest location is about 20 minutes away in Malden. Not sure if they deliver...

unless someone else is delivering the piece into your apartment, wouldn't a flat pack Expedit that comes in pieces be a lot easier to get to the third floor than a constructed bookcase of the same dimensions? I have the Expedit--and it was much more staircase friendly than my solid bookcases, mostly because we could take it apart and then put it back together. and once assembled, it isn't any harder to move around than my other bookcases.

There is a new furniture store in Davis, where Chinook used to be on Holland. They seemed to have a lot of used furniture. Maybe you'd find something unique and to your liking there? I can't think of the name of it, the sign is kind of hippy-looking.

For craft storage, maybe consider something like the Closetmaid cubes? Here's the link to them on the Target website (http://www.target.com/Closetmaid-9-Cube-Organizer-Alder/dp/B001UTTZEW/ref=br_1_3?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=1283871011&node=1283871011&searchRank=salesrank&searchPage=1&searchSize=30&id=Closetmaid%209%20Cube%20Organizer%20Alder). I have 4 of these units, stacked as two and two, and using the optional fabric bins. They're great for organizing stuff and pretty cheap. Also easy to assemble so not a problem lugging (they'd fit in the boxes on a Mini back seat).
