OK, I think this hasn't come up here before. I need to get my windshield replaced on my old clunker in order to pass inspection. Its an old car that I plan to replace soon so I'm a little annoyed I need to replace the windshield at all, but I think the crack is too long to be repaired and/or pass inspection.

Anyone have a recommendation for a place to replace it? I thought my insurance covered it but apparently the minimal coverage I have doesn't. The quotes I get from the usual places are in the $300 range.

I'm sorry it's not *in* Somerville, but I've gone to JN Phillips right on Mass Ave in Arlington. http://www.jnphillips.com/ARLINGTON.html

Great service and pretty "usual" prices without any hidden fees or surprises.

Seconding JN Phillips. They'll even come do it at your house during the day -- I had this done and it was super convenient, and have had no subsequent problems.

And, there are some comments from when I asked this question before here:

Insurance companies often have glass people that they work with. Regardless of whether your windshield is covered, might be worth giving them a call.

I'm actually told that in MA, the glass is always or almost always covered if it's cracked. Part of the mandated coverage list. So you might be able to get it done for not-much.

Thirding JN Phillips -- and they're reasonably priced. I had to pay for a non-covered repair once myself and while I don't remember what it cost, it was right in line with other quotes.

Try more inspections

My windshield has a huge crack in it. When I took it to get inspected, the mechanic said he couldn't give me a sticker with a windshield like that. I told him it was barely noticeable and not a problem, and he went ahead with the inspection. Just sayin

It came up before
