We love this apartment so much we bought one a lot like it across the square... and so did the people we sublet from four years ago. $1750, 1000 square feet, with off-street parking, laundry in basement, just steps from the square. Cats OK.

I pay less than that on my mortgage (without even counting the substantial tax deduction on interest) for my ~1600 sq feet single family.

~3 minutes walk to Davis Sq. Bought in 2001. I suppose I'm lucky.

What does it say about our local market that my first thought is that the apartment sounds like an amazingly good deal? And someone else's first thought is this?

I agree.

It's a very heterogeneous and generally overpriced market.

But you also pay taxes, maintenance, and repairs, whereas the landlord pays all of those with this place.

Renting makes better sense for some people, and buying makes better sense for other people.

True, but the mortgage check I send includes insurance and taxes... Repairs are less than 3Ks per year.

Yes, but you bought in 2001. The extra cost of the time machine would balance out any savings for someone looking for a place to live today.

Sorry, I thought that the housing crisis had also caused a collapse of rental prices (given that buying a place is easier now)...

Prices aren't down to 2001 levels, according to Case-Shiller. Also, rental prices reflect rises in taxes, water bills, and maintenance costs.
