Magic Hat SIngle Chair Ale

A friend of mine (who does not have a livejournal account) tried the Magic Hat Single Chair on tap at Christopher's in Porter awhile back and is now quite fond of it. She would like to find it in a bottle, but hasn't been able to find it anywhere. Have you seen it and where? Thanks in advance!

Ron; I appreciate the fact that you want to be helpful, but why do you routinely give answers on DSLJ to questions that you know nothing about except for what you find doing a quick Google search?

Because quite often, the OP could find the answer themself by doing a quick Google search, calling 311, or something similar.

If I wanted to know where to find a specific beer, I'd certainly do some legwork myself (at the least calling or visiting my favorite local beer shops to ask, and if that didn't work, the brewery) before asking the DSLJ to do my work for me.

That is a very big assumption to make, to think the poster HASN'T done the legwork. In fact, the poster (well, the poster's friend) has done the legwork, looking online, asking various retailers, friends, etc and hasn't found much to go by. I'm choosing to post here because sometimes it's nice to have anecdotal knowledge and what better place to look for that knowledge than on a community blog. Perhaps, I will reconsider in the future.

If nothing else works, I'd try phoning up the brewery and asking whether they ship this particular variety to our area.

It's true, I did assume and I'm sorry if I got it all wrong. In that case, what did the buyer at Downtown say when asked and what did Magic Hat say when contacted? I'm quite curious as to how their answers implied that this community would know better.

Like I said, I told a friend I would ask around to see if anyone had seen it. I'm not sure of all the details but know that they had looked at several stores and the Magic Hat website to try and find out if and where it may be available. I know that this community has been very helpful to people when trying to find items in the past and thought it might be a good place to ask. I'm sorry if this post clogged up inboxes and/or wasted anyone's time.

It's one of my absolute favorites, and I'm pretty sure it's not available in bottles, only kegs or growlers from the brewery. The Magic Hat website used to have a locator for their beers, not sure if it's still there. The only places I've ever found it was Sunset Grill in Allston and the BU Pub.

Let me know if you find bottles, and I'm glad to know it's in Porter!

If it's a winter seasonal, it may not be out in stores just yet. It could end up as the "mystery beer" in the winter 12 packs too. Additional evidence - the name Single Chair could be a reference to ski lifts on small mountains.


(I have no actual knowledge of this, just a sense that Circus Boy [my fave, though I've yet to try Single Chair] followed a similar route.)

It DOES in fact refer to Single Chair ski lift. Perhaps, it's just too soon to tell, if it is super-seasonal and not quite winter, then perhaps we just have to wait :(.

Magic Hat's web site says that Single Chair is a 'year round' beer. They are holding a 'beer dinner' next Tuesday at Cambridge Common, on Mass. Ave. about a mile from Davis Square. That might be a good place to ask about their distribution.

I asked Magic Hat and this is what they say: "We don't bottle Single Chair. It's always on tap at our brewery, at certain ski areas and under private labels at some bars".

that's very strange since this appears to be a bottle of Single Chair. Maybe they used to bottle it but stopped? All the reviews labelled 'bottle' there are from 2006 or earlier.
