I am looking for some beef bones to make stock. Does anyone know if Whole Foods or any of the other local butchers offer these?

I've had a few bad experiences with McKinnons, so I'd rather not go there, but if they are good for that I may try them again..

Try Dave's Fresh Pasta, they now have a meat counter and I swear I saw some bones wrapped up for dogs.

Fresh Pond WF has oxtail and cheeks in the freezer case, so maybe they have non-tail bones too.

RedBones gives away free bones for dogs, but I dont know what theyd do if you asked for more than a couple. Also, theyre already cooked- is that good or bad? I make chicken stock from leftover chicken bones all the time but would uncooked bones be better for beef stock?

FYI, cooked bones are really bad for dogs - they can splinter off tiny shards that can lodge in the dog's throat and digestive system, causing internal bleeding. On the other hand, raw bones of any kind are great for dogs and don't splinter!

I always make stock with cooked bones, including beef stew - it shouldn't be a problem for cooking!

Savenor's Market on Kirkland St. sells quality soup bones. Call them in advance to place an order, and they'll have them sawed and split however you want them.

I second this. I needed marrow bones recently and they were fabulous.

Third. I've made stock and marrow and they've been excellent each time from Savenor's. As far as I'm concerned, there simply isn't another option.

They sell soup bones at the Market Basket in Union Square. Also pig and chicken feet, if you're inclined to cook either of those. It's an offal wonderland there.

You want bones? Sure, how many?
Hearts and brains? We got plenty!
Want livers and lights? We’ll put you to rights,
Crusin’ through an Offal Wonderland.

Recipes so antique-y
Call for delicacies freaky
Where Granny and Pop would happily shop,
Cruisin’ through an Offal Wonderland.

Don’t look in the bakery for the sweetbreads,
Don’t dial up a call girl for some tongue,
Chicken feet and hooves aren’t foreign pastries,
Though I’m sure someone would say they keep you young...

Old-time chefs never ask it
They all know Market Basket
Adventurous taste makes mock’ry of waste
Cruising through an Offal Wonderland.
