Stinky's

I couldn't find much in tags about Stinky's pet grooming in Ball Square, but I wondered what recommendations I could get with regard to claw trimming there (Yelp is my good friend but there wasn't much there). Benjamin will not let me anywhere near his claws for a clipping, but now that he has largely retired from his epic scratching projects, it's got to be done. I buy pet supplies from Stinky's and have always been quite happy, and it's right across the street. Would love if it could work out for regular claw clippings, too...

they were excellent (though charged a bit more than i expected) trimming my dog's claws and the long hairs from her toes, around snowfall-time last year. i may have it done again this year, as she hates ice-packs on her paws. my dog is very mellow though and i usually trim her claws myself, i had them do it mostly for the fur-trimming part.

i don't remember exactly, but it wasn't nearly that much -- maybe $40? but i'm sure you could telephone them and get their actual rates.

I'm pretty sure Porter Square Vet charges $15 for nail trimming, and they handle my kitteh with his claws of death quite well. (I physically can't trim them at home - even with two of us trying). Hopefully Stinky's wouldn't be charging much more than that, the owner seems quite nice there.

They groom our mini schnauzer - hair cut, shampoo and nail clipping. I think she does a nice job and our puppy has adjusted to her. I think it costs us like $35 for the whole thing. It probably depends on the size of the animal.

I've been bringing my dog to Stinky's for 6 years. She does a terrific job & her rates are reasonable.

I cannot advise against Stinky's enough. I'm glad the other commenters here have had good experiences there; mine was abysmal and scary and did lasting trauma-damage to my cat.

My cat -- described as mellow and easy and a sweetheart by groomers in Medford, Belmont, and Somerville (by the way, Belmont Pet Shop on Common St. and Pet Spa in Somerville both *rock*!) -- had a horrible trim at Stinky's. Worse, when I arrived to pick him up, the two groomers were rude and nasty about my cat's "attitude" and said they were "used to difficult cats like that." When one of the groomers went to reach in to remove my cat from the kennel, my cat reared up and started screeching and hissing; I thought they had the wrong cat! The groomer let me get my cat out of the kennel (usually, he'd just come right to me, grateful to escape a cage), but he hissed at me, too, and swiped at me.

It took him 2-3 months to stop acting like an abused or feral cat in our home after that. He hissed and cringed, he darted from under chairs to under tables, he watched us warily, all new behavior and very different from his roll around on his back purring, chilled out normal behavior. We were worried he wouldn't recover; he was nothing like how he had been before.

He's completely fine now and has been to other groomers every few months with not even close to a repeat to what happened at Stinky's.

Huh, I'm sorry to hear about your experience, opn! I wonder what happened. In my experience, Joanne (I believe?) has been great with my Sphynx cat. I only bring her in for nail trims though, about once a month. She's quick, friendly to my cat, and it's $10. My cat who howls and screeches and hisses at me scarcely has time to register what she's doing before she's done. Also, there's some green coupon book circulating around now (she has some in the shop), and there's a 2-dollar-off coupon in their for nail trimming. GL!
