I think I have a broken circuit breaker -- as in, I can't get it to reset/switch back to ON, which is about as much fiddling I think is SAFE to do with something like a breaker panel. (Can you say "Oh, hell, no!"?)

Does anybody have a recommendation for a local electrician who would be willing to come out for a piddly call like replacing a breaker (if indeed that's the problem)?

(I looked in the list of tags and didn't see one that looked appropriate for this aside from home repair, sorry! Please tag it as appropriate, and I'll remember it for next time.)

Unfortunately I can't answer the question, but 'home repair' is the correct tag to use.

You may want to unplug/disconnect everything on that circuit. Often that behavior indicates a short in something being powered by the circuit. It's a lot cheaper to replace a toaster than have an electrician come to your house!

If you do have an electrician come out, I've been happy with Gibbons Electric (http://www.gibbonselectric.com/).

I'm not an electrician and don't know one in the area but a couple of things (that you may have tried) might help:
1) Did you flip the breaker to the OFF position before flipping it back to ON? When breakers trip, they go into a middle position and you usually have to flip it all the off or back on

2) If you know what's connected to the breaker (as in, it should be labeled if your original electrician followed electric codes), turn off and unplug those loads (lights, appliances, etc.). Then try the breaker again. If it still doesn't reset then it probably is a bad breaker (or worse, a damaged wire). Otherwise, you may have an appliance problem.

If it won't go back on, there's probably a short on the line causing it to immediately trip. Don't keep fiddling with it.

Patrice Vautier is a local guy I've used for a few small jobs. He's very friendly & I've been happy with his work.

As someone else noted, flip the breaker all the way off and then back on. (This took me a while to figure out, myself.) If it still won't stay on, either the breaker is broken, or it's doing its job and you have a short somewhere in that circuit (either in the wiring or an appliance or fixture connected to it).

I'd recommend my boyfriend, but he is not yet licensed. You could try the company he works for to see if they can help you, Driscoll Electric (http://www.driscollelectric.net/index.html).

Not a bad idea. The licensing is mostly a scam to keep prices up anyway.
