Okay, kids. I'm new to the area and wondering what there is to do in Somerville/Cambridge for the post-liberal arts set. Book groups, poetry readings, etc? Generally cool ways to meet people? Much thanks!

macintyre and moore books, next to diesel, on elm st.

and, get on the somerville arts council mailing list (yahoo/egroup) and especially look for anything posted by one Douglas Holder.

Shmooze in the Diesel and express interest in other people's reading matter. It works.

Invite people to a get together in the Diesel or the Someday to talk about your obscure academia topic of choice. [livejournal.com profile] cnoocy, for example, speaks Latin with folks.

Follow the MIT community; cool fun theatre &c.

Sure. :) Once I was hanging out in the Diesel with a friend talking about a NEMLA paper we're working on and mocking overwritten papers. Several hours later I walked back in and a man looked up and said "are you the teleology girl?" We had a long and interesting conversation about teleology. It was great.

I had the same reaction when I saw your post. It was all "wait! fandom person! in Davis Square!"

Welcome to the neighborhood.

Harvard Bookstore hosts readings and events pretty frequently--they've got a mailing list. And the new Porter Square Books (Porter Books?) in the Porter Square mall seems to be following suit.

And (shameless plug) definitely check out Theatre@First (http://www.TheatreAtFirst.org)'s production of T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral this weekend.

Welcome to the neighborhood! :)

I see you like Garden State from you user info so be sure to see it in the Somerville Theater right down in Davis Square. :)

I'm sorry I'm not much help, I still struggle with the what to do/how to meet people thing around here!

Zach Braff is many a person's boyfriend! *le sigh*
Do you read his blog?

I know how you feel. I know it's there and sometime this week I'm going to make it down there to see it yet again!

Thank you so much!
