Looks like we might be going all high-tech at some point with a pay-as-you-go fare card system:

When the system is fully operational, presumably everyone's card will know how much they have to pay, and you won't have to show ID.

Except sr/tap fares are so cheap that the id is to make sure you don't lend them to your friends, I think.
