Hi! I am moving to the area in January, from a land void of a decent bagel. How are the bagels there? Where should I get them?

Seconds on Rosenfeld's in Newton Centre (its on the Green Line D if you don't have a car.) Really, the best ones I have had around here, although I haven't been to Katz's. I think Kupels is overrated and their cream cheese has often been out too long. Bagel Rising is OK but I find it below the Brueggers line.

Somerville is unfortunately devoid of decent bagels. Perhaps an opportunity for an entrepreneur?

It's always struck me as funny how bagel places around here all have these super Jewish names. It's like they feel the need to prove their authenticity. Everyone knows bagels are Jewish even if the place isn't called Cohen & Shapiro Bagels, though. In the New York area, bagel places have names like Bagel Paradise and Bagel King. Hot Bagels is an extremely popular name. I'm inclined to try Bagel World on the North Shore because its name conforms to the NY standard. The big Montreal places, St. Viateur and Fairmount, are named after the streets they are on. This is also acceptable.

Family names of the folks who own and run the places is my guess. Why that's any different from anywhere else is beyond me. Ascribing some bizarre marketing motive to the whole thing seems a little unlikely, however.

I was being semi tongue-in-cheek. It's just noticeably different from what I grew up with, and it seemed weird.

Absolutely! A bagel cart in Davis selling fresh homemade bagels in the morning would be lovely.
