Based on current weather projections, the City will be declaring a snow emergency effective at 5 p.m. today.

During snow emergencies, parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street only (unless otherwise posted). Cars not moved from the even numbered side of the street by 9 p.m. Saturday night may be subject to ticketing and towing. Residents unable to find a parking space on the odd-numbered side of the street may park in any municipal lot or in designated school parking lots.

Please note that the City’s Illuminations Tours will continue as scheduled.

For additional information, please call the city’s 311 constituent service line or visit our website at www.somervillema.gov.

Is there any leniency with the metered parking in the main thoroughfares in the square, or will they start towing promptly at 9?

We have 900 people coming to tonight's Slutcracker, which is over by 9:45pm; we're going to have so many patrons who don't pay attention to, or are unaware of the 'odd side of the street' rule, who will undoubtedly try to park in the metered spots on the even side.

(Yes, they should take the T (which we relentlessly suggest on the web and phone recordings) and yes, they should investigate where they have to park, but many people do not, and then they get angry.)

-Ian/Somerville Theatre

And BTW, yes, all shows will go on as scheduled!

I would definitely call 311 about this. Maybe they can bump the towing/ticketing to 10 or 10:30PM?

I agree. The City of Somerville needs to understand that the Somerville Theatre is a beloved local business while Pat's Tow is universally hated. Which one will the city choose to support tonight?

Cambridge's snow emergency starts at 10 pm. I don't think we're really going to get the storm an hour earlier than our neighbor.

The one that directly fills its coffers.

I'm not sure the money for the tow goes to anyone but Pat's. The city only makes money from the tickets, which are given irrespective of towing. What I hate most about towing is precisely that it just greases Pat. The fees are obscene and the city doesn't seem to care.

I agree that towing has to happen sometimes, but it's sad that the system appears to be so corrupt (though I don't know that the city is at fault for that).

My guess is that if the city doesn't work with Pat's, the Somerville News (half-owned by Pat's) will withdraw its support for the city government.

*nod* And angry at the wrong things/by association; "We got towed when we went to an event at the Somerville Theatre; I'm not *going* there ever again!"

I'm surprised Somerville's snow emergency is declared for so much earlier than Cambridge, TBH. (Edit: Misunderstood; saw title and thought that meant cars had to be moved by 5, given the contents of the previous snow emergency post for Cambridge.)

(I've got tickets for the Sunday matinee of Slutcracker; I know it may be a bit early to try to predict if the snow will let it still go on, but I assume updates will be posted to the website and/or phone line, right?)

Sunday's performances will go on as scheduled; the storm should be over by noonish by all accounts anyhow, and we're reasonably proficient with a shovel!

I'll also add that I don't hold the city responsible for any people who park in the wrong spot; there is such a thing as personal responsibility here, and we also have this wonderful underground train here in Davis, so it's not like we're in a strip mall in Saugus where driving is the only option (no offense intended to plastic cows.) Nor do I feel the city is 'not supporting' us by declaring a snow emergency - they're just doing their jobs too.

i assume the sunday evening performance is sold out as well by now?

(i did check the website a couple days ago but it said 'online dates sold out' and i wasn't sure what that meant exactly.)

Yes, both Sunday performances are sold out. We did update the blurb at the top of the page for online sales for that show to say "100% SOLD OUT" but I can see why people might not read it.

When online sales are sold out, all sales are sold out; it is one of the weird things about our ticketing system that it only says 'online sales'.

thanks so much for the info! my computer at my apt is REALLY old and hates doing anything, so i spend as little time online on it as possible so it's possible that's why i didn't notice the blurb. just wasn't sure if the word 'online' suggested tickets were available in person.

thanks again, i'll be more on my game next time for sure - a friend is doing makeup and always raving about how fun it is - i got curious too late!

I was visiting a friend in Ten Hills today. I parked on the even side of the street so as to not use up a "good" parking spot for the actual residents who would be there all night, and we made sure to leave well before 9. I got a $100 ticket, time stamped 7:45pm.

FIGHT IT!!!

From the city's webpage:
Ticketing of cars parked on the even-numbered side of the street will commence on all streets four hours after the emergency is declared.

I'm hoping to appeal as soon as the on-line system has heard of the ticket number. :-\

The emergency was announced at like, noon, though.

Sure, it wasn't that I didn't know about it. It was that the announcement said "cars not moved by 9 may be ticketed" so I made sure to move the car before 9.

DOesn't matter - the policy is that there are four hours from when the snow emergency is actually declared.

From the original post:
the City will be declaring a snow emergency effective at 5 p.m. today.

Meaning, four hours later - 9pm.
