Proper comment:

Not to impugn the quality of their food, but to be honest, I'm not really sure what a pizza joint will add to Davis. We've already got Mike's.

Noble but Probably Failed Attempt to Block Butthurt/Wank:

Yes, I know not everybody likes the pizza places in the Square. Yes, I know some of you think the best pizza is in New York. Yes, I know some of you think there is no good pizza in Davis. All of this has been quite firmly established and does not need to be rehashed. Thanks.

Flatbread pizza is an entirely different style from anything now sold in Davis Square. Also, this is probably the only feasible way to keep it a bowling alley, as the Sacco family want to get out of the business.

I've been to the restaurant. I don't loathe it but I'm not a fan either, it's literally no different from any of the hundreds of restaurants opened by self-styled "bobo" Flatlanders in Vermont over the years. I spent my high school years in a town full of restaurants precisely like that, and they're nice enough, but ultimately they're all just as bland and generic as the restaurants they're supposed to be an alternative to. I can walk into any of those places and guess with confidence they've got a pizza with goat cheese, carmelized onions, and sundried tomatoes, some form of avacado burger with turkey and vegan alternatives, and a roasted vegetable wrap.

I'm glad it's still a bowling alley and I'm also glad it's got a liquor license. I'll probably patronize the place at some point. I just don't see how it adds anything, to be honest.

I'm not a total pizza elitist, and I'm not from new york, and I love the diversity of food available in this area, but Mike's is very meh pizza. The only really good pizza I've had around Davis is at Boccelli's in medford, but they don't deliver. Maybe the pizzeria Regina people should put a branch in davis.

Mmmm, Stone Hearth. Not so excited about Zing Pizza's crust, but in general really good.

And, y'know, Amelia's in Teele has really good pizza too. More traditional, but tasty. They don't deliver, though.

Your opinion needs rehashing, but contrary ones don't? Mike's is among the blandest least interesting food in the square. Some people prefer that, so that's fine. (I have one friend, for example, who's a very picky eater and she loves Mike's) But to say that we don't need any other restaurants because we already have Mike's is to assume that everyone shares your taste, which you, by your comment, already realize is not the case.

From what I heard at the Davis Square Task Force meeting, they have received all the necessary licenses and permits, and just have to start construction, probably next month. They expect to keep 10 bowling lanes open even during construction.

Flatbread, bar, and keeping candlepin? I am a hundred-fold A-OK with this addition! :D In fact, if they were to take over Chipotle and build another flatbread-and-candlepin, I would welcome that as well... *whistling*

Keeping 10 candlepin lanes, taking away 5.

Right there with you on this one! Yay for candlepin!

(Though to be fair, I'd be fine if the Chipotle were replaced with a vacant lot, so it's not a high bar.)

Just wondering.. what is it that you don't like about Chipolte? I'm not a big fan of theirs but like it enough to go in once in a while... its usually empty.

What I don't like is the lack of anything to *like*. I tried it a couple of times and their burritos were so lacking in anything resembling interesting flavor that I don't even bother when they're giving 'em away for free. Which for me is saying a lot.

As I recall, their veg selections were also terrible and they're a big national chain owned by McDonalds, so there's no reason to support them. When I want a Mexican-style burrito, Anna's is right down the street and they don't suck.

Oops. I even searched because I wasn't sure of that but apparently read out of date info. In any case, everything else still applies. The McDonald's thing was just icing. :)

You are just not ordering right. Chipotle is delicious and they don't buy tortured animal meat like every other place.

That was my main motivator for giving Chipolte a try. They are making a decent effort to stay clear of sourcing meat from factory farm (aka animal abuse) operations. If you get a chance watch their profile in the film Food Inc.

If ordering off the menu isn't ordering right, then I still think the problem is theirs.

I suppose it's better that they don't torture the animals before they kill them, but I don't know that that makes the food taste any better, and I don't eat 'em either way, anyway.

I quite like Mike's Sicilian pizza, but I don't really think it's relevant to how Flatbread will do if they're having food & candlepin bowling both - let alone whether there's another restaurant "just like it" already. (At least it's not burritos!)

Does anyone know if this is the same Flatbread Pizza out of Portland, Maine? I used to go there when I lived in P-land and thought it quite tasty.

I definitely think it would be a lovely addition to Davis...and if it's the same they are a great neighborhood business that frequently hosts non-profit fundraisers if I remember correctly. If it's not eh, flatbread pizza is still a lovely addition...and it's nice to see bowling will not go away!

Yes, it is. Their website is http://FlatbreadCompany.com and they list Portland as one of their locations. The closest location to us is on Route 62 in Bedford.

If you click on the "sacco's bowl-haven" tag (that I put on this post), you'll see earlier discussion of this topic.
