[x-posted to [livejournal.com profile] cambridge_ma]

The White Hen Pantry in North Cambridge (corner of Mass Ave. and Day St., next to Pemberton Farms and, AFAIK, the closest 24hr store to Davis Sq.) is GONE.

Sign in the window: "Lost our lease Dec 1. Thanks to all our loyal customers for 15 years of business. Visit the White Hen at [Porter Sq. address]"

*sob*

Is there a 24hr store -- as opposed to the "Store 18" -- near Davis?

That's absolutely terrible. I could always count on being able to stumble in there at any hour of the morning when I lived up by Frank's. I certainly hope nothing Fucking Gentrified comes out of this, but I suspect it will.

I hear you on that. I live nextdoor to Pemberton which is next door to White Hen...:( No more late night munchy runs! Or the instance of drunken men talking to those poor russian women...comical(I'm guessing that they were russian)

Well, the CVS in Porter Square is 24 hours...not the same thing, but you can get some food items there.

That's interesting. I was surprised the other day to find the CVS in Ball Square was gone--and there was a sign that a White Hen Pantry would be coming there soon.

Unfortunately, since that's also in Somerville, it's probably not going to be open 24 hours/day.

That CVS moved up the streets to its new digs on the corner of Medford and B'way (more space + a parking lot).

And there's an all night Store 24 on Prospect Street and B'way in Cambridge.

Yup, I knew about the new location (it's close to where I live), but hadn't really thought through that it was essentially the relocation of the Ball Square one.

A 24 hours store at Prospect and B'way in Cambridge isn't of much use to Davis Square residents who don't have cars.

Yes, that CVS moved up Broadway to Magoun Square, in a big new building. Irritates me no end, as I just moved quite close to Ball Square. :-(

Doh! I was happy to hear that Magoun Square was getting one; when I lived there, I would have liked to have a convenient drugstore. But I didn't realize they were doing it by taking the Ball Square one away -- now Ball Square people are in the same position!

Your irritation, my gain. (The new one was completed not too long after I moved--I'm quite close to it.)

Unfortunately, since that's also in Somerville, it's probably not going to be open 24 hours/day.

Is that just an observation about Somerville being sleepy, or is there a bylaw of some variety?

I think it's a Somerville mandate. I recall seeing signs at the Store "18" shortly after I moved to Davis Square, saying that their hours were [list of hours] due to Somerville regulations.

fairly certaint it's a mandate. i heard the same thing from a friend. stores must be closed by midnight, except bars, i believe.

the white hen in porter square is still going strong, and open 24 hours/day.

Well, hell, what am I going to do now on Sunday nights when the Pembertons close annoyingly early?

(that was a rhetorical whine - no real answer needed)

i was there on 12/1 and wanted to cry. i live a block away, and they were my go-to place when i'd run out of cat food. the CVS in porter is only about 1/2-mile walk away, so i guess they'll be my new source. *weep*
