I'm with NSTAR. I was looking at my electric bill. Consumption this month: ~950 KWH. Last month: ~550 KWH. I'm home most evenings, no new computers, no new gadgets. No electric heaters, since I use gas (I have no idea how much the furnace uses to circulate the forced air). I used some Xmas LED decorations, but come on, they are LEDs. Something seems odd to me.
Just curious if anyone else has noticed something odd comparing this month with the last one. Yes, it's been colder, but if you don't use electric heating, it should not be a big factor, no?

Are the number of days each month the same? My NStar billing months have fluctuated from as few as 22 days to as many as 35, for no obvious reason.

Also, are they actually reading your meter each month, or are you getting estimated readings some months?

Are you sure? I've never had my meters read monthly as long as I've lived here (14 years). Did you switch to the radio meters? I didn't and maybe that's my prob.

What is your year-to-year for December? Mine jumps around a lot monthly, but always tends to be in line with the same month of the previous year.

I'm pretty sure my electric meter can be read from outside the building - how do you know you haven't had your meters read?

Another thing to keep in mind is that an electric motor (e.g. a fan) can take a lot of energy, in particular to start it up. So yes, the more you use your furnace the more electricity it will burn. Granted, 400KWh does seem an awful lot for just a furnace.

On my bills, it says "actual read" or "estimated".

It's denoted on the bill somewhere. I think with an asterisk or some symbol next to the KWH.

I have forced air in an SF house. The fans do use a lot of power -- my usage went from 439kWh to 637kWh, comparable to a year ago -- but your jump is a lot more than mine was. Did you replace your air filters? If they're clogged, the fans are going to work a lot harder.

You might want to buy or borrow a Kill-a-Watt to check things around the house. The furnace/blower seems like a good target, just to know how much it uses during a day of operation. I've been surprised by some things - a stereo receiver that was left on was drawing about 100W, even when muted. From your 18kWh/day to 27kWh/day jump, you have about 375 watts (continuous) to track down.

Check your refrigerator. I had a similar issue last year and it turned out my compressor was on almost all the time. It's easy not to notice, as refrigerator noise is very much "white noise" to me.

My NSTAR bills are usually pretty freakin' weird, too. Our habits don't change but the readings fluctuate a great deal, enough that I've wondered if someone isn't periodically stealing electricity from us.

Also, am I the only one who has to go through Captcha to post in this community? I've been on LJ for eight years and I find that kind of insulting, TBH.

I'm asked to go through Captcha every time I try to comment here. I'll try posting this comment as a response to email to see if it still happens.

ETA: Yes, it still happens.

When you log in while making a comment you have to click a ticky-box or else it doesn't keep you logged in, which is annoying (it also only captchas at login for comments, not when logging in at the main page). You can go to livejournal.com to see if you're really logged in - it'll greet you by username at the top if you are and offer a login box at the upper right corner if not. If you have done the ticky-box and it's still not keeping you logged in or you logged in from the main page yet no love, something might be screwy with your cookies - check you browser settings.

That's not the problem here. This LJ community does not allow anonymous comments (from non-logged-in users) at all.

Oh, I thought the problem was [livejournal.com profile] sophiaserpent had to keep logging in when she expected to already be logged in, not that she wanted to comment anonymously. The communities I'm in are about 50/50 on allowing anonymous comments (and my friends almost all disallow anonymous comments except for certain posts) and some don't even allow non-members to comment, so that didn't occur to me as an odd thing.

This happens if you leave a comment in the community but have not joined the community. We had to take this action to impede spambots who were leaving junk comments in the community.

Further explanation here.

That's too big of a change

Do you have historical data for a year ago?

You should compare the "Avg. Daily Electric Use (kWh)" as it is listed on your Nstar bill, not the total consumption. The number of billing days per month varies wildly.

Do you have an electric water heater? If so, it too will use more power when it's colder - the incoming water temperature is (much) lower in the winter, so the heater has to spend more energy to bring it up to the desired temperature.

We have forced air (gas, with electric blower I assume) and an electric water heater. Our installation is relatively new - only about 3 years old. The furnace is high efficiency; the water heater is a pretty standard model.

This month our power consumption per day was about 13% higher than last month.

The difference you're seeing is not normal, imo. You may want to investigate if you have a malfunctioning device somewhere.

For further comparison with someone using forced air, my daily power consumption went up 22%, from 15.1 to 18.4. Also a high-efficiency furnace (about 5 years old) but a gas water heater. I'm heating 3 floors with recent insulation in the upper floors.

That's so odd, I just looked at my bill and couldn't believe my bar chart change. But then I noticed it was a 33 day cycle, which mostly explains the difference from my usual usage. That and a few Christmas lights.

But yours is much too dramatic.

No, not over last month. About 10% over last year. Here's my data:

I try to keep under 200 KWH mostly. A few ceiling fans in the summer and holiday lights in the winter can push me over. I really wish they'd be consistent on the length of the billing cycle.

That is freakish.

One time I can remember a fluke in my bill, a few years back. It came in at zero. And there's no chance that I lived electron-free for that month. I called and they said it appeared to be a glitch, and it came out in the wash in the next bill.

I'd call and get it on the record that you've noticed something awry. But it may be essentially a typo.

The blower motor in your furnace probably draws 500 watts or so. It takes a lot of energy to move air around. That would probably explain the January spike. If you use AC in the summer that would explain the August spike. January being the coldest month and August being the hottest.

my electric water heater was placed by builders into a non-heated part of building, past month was cold and therefore I had spike in consumption.

Yikes!

Ours just came in too.. it's more than double november! And we have gas on one floor, electric downstairs.. but it's been set roughly around 60 degrees or so downstairs. Something seems really fishy.

I believe so yes. The total charge for Dec 20-Jan 20 (ish) was more than double Nov 20-Dec 20, and More than quadruple Oct 20-Nov 20.

My average daily electric use was 32 kWh this past month, compared to 24.6 last month (not shocking, as some of my house has electric heat). It was 35.7 kWh for the same month last year.
