The Rosebud has always annoyed me, because they don't let you put your feet on the seats. I'm really short and my feet don't touch the ground when I sit in the booths. So I tend to sit crosslegged so that my feet don't go numb, but they always yell at me for putting my feet on the chairs.
i miss eat so much. it makes me want to cry if i think about it too hard. i'm glad i'm not the only one who remembers it.
now that it's gone... i would actually agree with jadelennox -- India Palace in Union Square. because for the 3 years i lived on Prospect Hill they cheerfully delivered consistently delicious, relatively cheap piles of food up the hill, a true lifesaver. especially on the "spring cleaning" weekends when we were all so exhausted and hungry that if they hadn't been around we might've truly killed each other.
wow. now i really really want one of their pistachio shakes. i've never managed to find one quite as good anywhere else.
I've found Diva to be too expensive and so-so in terms of food and service. On the other hand, Namaskar has some of the best Indian that I've had in this country, and they do well with service and decor. Plus, the prices are (a little) better, the portions are bigger, and it's only a block away from Diva. Check it out!
$13.00 for a scrambled eggs in an unwarmed tortilla with little more for interest than a teaspoon each of sour cream and what I'm certain was Ortega salsa?
Depends really on what kind of food/experience I'm looking for...
Redbones for barbecue/beer Renee's or The Neighborhood for brunch Dali. Just Dali. Anna's for a quick Mexican fix. Namaskar for Indian, though I'm more likely to go to Punjab in Arlington.
Oh, the new Tibetan place in Davis is also fantastic. I think it's called Martasa on Elm, or something. Their vegetable dumplings are amazing, and every time I'm there I want pretty much one of everything on the menu.
Dali was the first restaurant I went to in somerville, before I moved here from New York. I'll say it clinched my decision to move *only* if it gets me a free meal there. :)
Antonia's takes too long. But when you can get a table on the square in nice weather...
The best italian place I've been to in town was Vinnie's Superette in East Somerville, in the sectioned-off back half of a convenience store. My mom saw it rated in newsweek and exhorted me to go, so I did. I don't regret it.
Soundbites is better than Johnny D's, but don't go there on a weekend. There is a breakfast place in union that's pretty decent and quirky. In inclement weather, they moving the line of people waiting for tables into the basement, which is amusing.
Sabur was a surprisingly good discovery. Eat (r.i.p.) was really nice.
I avoid rosebud and anna's, but I that's because I'm not big on diner or mexican fare.
Namaskar and Diva are a tie for me.
the best pizza in town is apparently that little cafe on highland a little past cedar.
For salads to go, diesel salads are better than blue shirt, except that diesel doesn't serve meat. I dream of them offering a chicken version of their caesar salad.
we've had a couple of exceptional meals at rudy's (in teele) over the past month or so. i always just thought it was "OK" before, but the last two times I've been extremely impressed.
and i'm a big fan of a lot of places already mentioned... gargoyle's (for something fancy), diva, red bones (for a beer and a veg burger)... all great options.
Namaskar Kelly's Gargoyles Dali and-- Why has no one mentioned EVOO yet????
Okay, they're expensive compared to the others, but for the *kind* fo cuisine they're very reasonable. And the food is as good as any in the area, with the possible exception of Radius in Boston.
Tu Y Yo in Powderhouse Square- i owe them my loyalty. always splendid. especially/even the sides of black beans and cilantro & tomato flavored rice. wow. and really good sangria. best we've found so far (since april)
