Unclaimed bike auction?

Many years ago, around 1996, I went to a police auction in Somerville where they auctioned off stolen bikes that had never been reclaimed - does anyone know anything about this, if they still do this? Thanks!

(I'm looking for a cheap 3-speed bike to noodle around the neighborhood on).

Does anyone have any recommendations for a local shop where I could see what's available and try some skates on for size? I'm not interested in anything too fancy -- just something to get around more quickly and get some exercise.
