Do you have a desire to help a great cause? Do you have friends and family members who will support you in your efforts? Would you like to earn a $75 gift certificate to your favorite store? Well, now is your chance!

The Brattle Theater has two months to raise $200,000. This seems like an unreachable goal, but there are many more fundraising events still to go and we all need to really push as hard as we can.

In order to harness the power of LJ, I am having an LJ fundraising contest. Here is what you need to do:

1) Go to http://www.firstgiving.com and click on "come on in" and then "create your page".
2) It will ask you "what sort of page do you wish to create?", select "other".
3) You can choose how ever long you wish to keep your webpage active, it is up to you.
4) The charity you are raising money for is the "Brattle Film Foundation".
5) Follow the options to create your own webpage.

Once you have created your webpage, email me your URL address. My email address is anomie666@excite.com

Here are the details/ rules:

1) The person who raises the most money will receive a $75 gift certificate to the store of their choosing. The person who finishes in second place will receive a $25 gift certificate. Please choose a store where I can buy the gift certificate online and have the code emailed to you. I will not be sending off personal checks or cash. (in case of a tie, 2 $50 gift certificates will be mailed).

2) All money raised must be online. If you collect money offline, please make an online payment for the amount of the money raised offline. Online "total money raised online" will count for your total.

3) The contest ends at midnight on February 17th. Gift certificates will be bought that weekend.

4) Only fundraising pages created after January 1st will count for this contest (previously raised money will not be included).

5) In order to see who is currently leading, I will make an LJ post and include it in my journal (which I will update every day).

If you have any questions, please respond here or email me at the address above.

Why is that not all of Somerville can get DSL? We don't exactly live out in the boonies.

Anybody know what the issue is, and which neighborhoods can and can't get DSL?

I've been living here for about a year and 2 months, and boy, is it great.

But could someone explain to me why no one can drive in/through Davis Square without

a) slamming on their brakes for no apparent reason

b) putting their flashers on in front of starbucks so they can get their caffeine fix

c) coming to a screeching halt in case someone 20 feet away was close to beginning to think about maybe stepping onto a crosswalk

I'm also confused why people fight like banshees for a meter spot when there are usually a plethora of parking spots on highland avenue. Oh noes, a 2 block trek!

There are also a lot of old people, which is fine -- I grew up in a geriatric paradise in pennsylvania, but often I seem to get nasty looks while walking down the street. Not to mention, I've caught more than one of my elderly neighbors spying on me while I walk/root to/around my car. I can't tell if they're fascinated or disgusted, but you'd really think living around Davis would have acclimated folks to less-than-mainstream dress, hair, and attitudes.

Bleh. It's just one of those days.

SNOW EMERGENCY DECLARED IN SOMERVILLE FOR TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT (12 A.M.)

SOMERVILLE - In accordance with the City's Snow Emergency Procedures,
Mayor Joe Curtatone has declared a snow emergency for the City of Somerville
to go into effect at midnight (12 a.m.), tonight, January 2-3, 2006. During
snow emergencies, parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street
only (unless otherwise posted). Cars not moved by 4 a.m. tomorrow morning
may be subject to ticketing and towing. Residents unable to find a parking
space on the odd-numbered side of the street may park in any municipal or
school parking lot for the duration of the emergency. Additional information
may be found on the city's website at http://www.ci.somerville.ma.us.

And just a reminder, folks, that the city has jumped up the fines. I think the new fine is $100 and your car subject to towing.

Out of the Blue, the fish restaurant at Highland and Cutter Avenue, has a sign in the window saying it is moving to 215 Elm Street. This is the storefront formerly occupied by Pluto, next door to the Rosebud.

On Mass. Ave., between Day and Dover streets, a vacant storefront has a sign announcing that the 'GRAND PRIX CAFE' is coming soon. (Hmm... the High Price Coffee?). This is in the short block of stores that also contains a Thai and a Bengali restaurant.
