Last night I went to my first Davis Square Task force meeting and I just have to say how interesting it was and how impressed I was by it all. It's great to know how many residents are so invested in the community and Rebekah did a great job leading the discussions. As a Davis Sq store owner I look forward to going to more of these meetings and getting a little more involved in any way I can.

P.S. The next meeting is scheduled for 7pm on Wednesday, February 22nd, also at 167 Holland Street (upstairs and to the left).

Sometime last week there was brief mention of desire (which I'm sure most of us share) for a Trader Joe's in Davis. Someone here, and I don't remember who, had information on that and said that Trader Joe's rejected Davis as a location because of the lack of parking. I've been thinking about that, and I'm wondering if that person, or anyone, has more information on how the company was approached or how they arrived at their decision.

If it's strictly a parking matter, one need only look at the Boylston Street store to know it can and does succeed with minimal-to-no parking.

Joe's has parking-lotted stores in Cambridge and Arlington. Yet they have not one store in Manhattan. Are they really that afraid of areas with low cars-to-residents ratios? Could it be that when they were asked about a Davis location, they simply didn't know the demographics of this neighborhood and presumed there would be no support or interest? A Davis location would be a goldmine for them, we all know that. But it would appear they don't.

So my questions:

Is there an appropriately sized space for them available? Who owns it?

We know the pros, but would there be any cons to their being here?

And, could an online petition with several thousand signatures from ethusiastic area residents who would be regular customers have enough positive influence to make them think again?

Curious for your thoughts...

We got a drive. Thanks!

OK, I know this is kinda out there, but I figured I'd give it a shot.

It's 9:30pm on Thursday. Does anyone in the Square happen to have a 10GB+ SCSI drive I (and the non-profit I work for) could borrow for a week?

Back story: I work for a educational non-profit near the Square. We do, among other things, software development. Tonight, our source control repository lost a drive. We've been having a spate of drive failures, and we have simply run out of on-hand replacements. We will be buying one ASAP, and having it Fed Exed, but even so, until we get that drive replaced no development can happen whatsoever. We are dead in the water.

So I'd figured I'd ask!

fire?

there seems to be some sort of fire department activity in the square. at least three firetrucks are blocking elm street near namaskar and the ladder - when i drove through about 15 min ago - was up over that side of that block.

any more info out there? i couldn't see smoke at the time i went by - and had to go around via orchard st.

edit: nothing to see here, move along. [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman checked it out and whatever it was, it's over. yay!
