The Massachusetts primary election is this Tuesday, September 19th.

We have two parties with official ballot status in Massachusetts: Democratic and Republican. Both parties will be holding primaries on Tuesday - but there are no contested Republican primaries in this area. With the exception of Governor/Lt. Governor, Democratic nominees will win every office that Cambridge & Somerville vote on. This is the election that counts, more than November!

You can vote in the Democratic primary if you registered to vote before August 30th, either as a Democrat or as unenrolled (no party). If you registered for a past election, you don't need to re-register. If you moved in the past six months and didn't re-register with your new address, vote at your old address. Find your precinct and polling place at WhereDoIVoteMA.com.

Contested Democratic Races

Research the candidates...
  • Visit their web sites.

  • For the statewide races, a lot of candidates have videos on YouTube - search for their names

  • Look for coverage on the Massachusetts political blogs, starting with Blue Mass Group. Blue Mass Group's blogroll lists all the other MA politics blogs.

I posted this a few days ago on [livejournal.com profile] ljmass and [livejournal.com profile] massachusetts without my own recommendations, but since there are a number of people on this community who ask me for candidate recommendations, I strongly recommend Deval Patrick, Andrea Silbert, and John Bonifaz for the statewide offices, and I have a mild preference for Bruce Desmond for Middlesex Clerk of Court. There are no other contested races in the Davis Square area (Somerville wards 6 & 7).

Disclosure: I am John Bonifaz's campaign blogger. Bonifaz is a voting rights and election reform leader, running for Secretary. You can read my blog posts at johnbonifaz.com. See also last week's front page Globe article about this race - why won't Bill Galvin debate?

Does anyone know where there is an off-leash dog park within the area? Ideally Somerville/Arlington and this way would be better. When i lived in CA we had dog parks everywhere! Yesterday I took my two dogs to the doggiefest and they absolutely loved the off-leash running area and the socializing with other dogs was great too.

Thank you!

We are bringing "The Margaret Ghost" back to life!
Written by Carol Braverman
Directed by Elizabeth Hunter

This original play has humor, romance, history, feminism, and transcendentalists! See the adventures of Margaret Fuller, an amazing 19th Century woman, born in Cambridge, who interacted with Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson
and Horace Greeley, as she blazes a path for herself and all women, from Boston to NYC to Italy in the 1840's.

Opening night is October 13. For more info, look under the cut

On the subject of dogs as well (since the last post here reminded me), can anyone recommend shelters/places that are good for adoption in and around the area? As of now, I'm only familiar with the shelter in the Back Bay (Boston) area and the MSPCA in Jamaica Plain.

Thanks!

Does anyone have an old armchair they would be willing to part with for less than fifty dollars? I'm looking for something in which I could read/listen to music/fall asleep. I plan to look in consignment shops, but I'd figure I'd ask here, since I like the community.
