Once again the dead will rise in Davis Square, shuffle around for a bit, and then head to The Cellar for a pint. It's happening on Saturday, May 12th (yeah, this Saturday) at 6:30 PM gathering in Davis. For those that missed it last year, it was a freakin' awesome good time. It's a refreshing change of pace from marching for things that matter, and if you want to skip the bar and bring your kids, they'll look really cute as zombies, I promise. The somewhat more official announcement is under the cut. (for even more details check out www.halfwaytohuman.com

On a standard lease, does anyone know how much notice the tenants are supposed to be given if they are renewing their lease if the landlord wants to increase the rent?

Short version: our lease is up at the end of this month. Last night was the first we'd heard of a possible increase in our rent after making it clear at least two weeks ago that we wanted to renew for another year. Our last month deposit has not been used. Can the landlord do this? Or are they required to have given us more notice than this?

Thanks very much for any help or advice in advance!

(an apartment in Somerville/Davis Square area)

EDIT: Thanks for everyone's help, we've come to an agreement with the landlord on the issue.

DARBI (Davis Area Resident Business Initiative) is a relatively new non-profit group (about a year old) and they meet once once a month. This month's meeting is tonight so I thought I'd help spread the word in case anyone is interested.

WHEN: 5/8/07, 7:00 pm
WHERE: Orthodontics at Davis Square, 30 College Ave.

AGENDA:
- The DARBI sub-teams (events, membership, green, beautification, davis donates, website, map/brochure, merchandising).
- The Local First initiative.
- The residential/business membership drive.
- The neighborhood crime situation.

From the DARBI website http://www.yourdavissquare.com
"About DARBI

The Davis Square Area Resident-Business Initiative (DARBI), a registered 501(c)4 nonprofit association of volunteers who live and/or work in the area, aims to:

* Promote Davis Square as an attractive place in which to live, visit, shop and conduct business.
* Propose and carry out solutions to the issues that matter most to residents and businesses."

Where could I find a 500-watt halogen light bulb in the Davis area?

This is a great social/networking opportunity for those interested in art and technology.

Dorkbot is a regular meeting of artists (sound/image/movement/whatever), hackers, designers, engineers, students and other interested parties who are involved in the creation of electronic art (in the broadest sense of the term).

To quote from the dorkbot-nyc description, the purpose of this group is:

  • give people doing strange things an opportunity for informal peer review
  • establish a forum for the presentation of new art works/technology/software/hardware
  • help establish relationships and foster collaboration between people with various backgrounds and interests
  • give us all a chance to see the cool things that our neighbors are working on

imaginary presentation topics:

  • a demo of the new motion tracking software you're writing
  • playing a video you made
  • an explanation of how you hacked your game boy to get it to make cool bleeping noises
  • trouble shooting/brainstorming your remote-controlled sandwich making robot
  • bringing in some dancers you're working with and having them demonstrate the interface used in your new mind-control ballet
  • discussing your approach to electronic sculpture
even if you don't have a project in the works, stop by and get inspired by others!

I realized I hadn't seen any reviews of Sagra (at 400 Highland Ave) since its opening, so I thought I'd post one here just for the heck of it, in case there were others who were curious.

Overall: I liked it. )
