seriously, I squee'd at today's groupon. it's $10 for $20 at Zing! Pizza. I squee'd so hard my roommate asked me what was up.

I love me some Zing! pizza, with all my heart. For those of you who do not know of it, Zing! started as the cafe in Porter Square Books, then opened a pizza place, on mass ave pretty near in *front* of Porter Square. They do a thin crust pizza that I adore, with lots of locally sourced meats and cheeses, and many vegan options, and gluten free ones and just all sorts of stuff, and everything is tasty as heck.

Also in davis square couponry, today's CoupMe is $20 for $40 at Diva. It can only be used during dinner hours (no going in with 4 people for the lunch buffet). I have never bought a CoupMe yet so I don't know much about the experience with them, I'm afraid.

Pursuant to a previous post and [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman's poll reminder, I wanted to provide one last update to information on voting by absentee ballot that I received from Somerville City Hall earlier this week.

You may vote at Somerville City Hall at 93 Highland Ave. until 4:00pm on Friday, January 15th.

Tonight, Thursday January 14th, City Hall Elections will be open until 7:00pm. The front desk will direct you to elections, which are down the stairs one floor directly in front of you as you walk in (it's well marked).

Complete the form that can be downloaded here and bring it with you, or City Hall elections can provide you with one. Please know what your voting address is.

Please be sure to vote in the upcoming election. Recent polls* have shown a tied race. So regardless of your political persuasion, every vote will count.

Also, please help spread the word about the special election by reminding friends and family.

This will be the last reminder, I promise.

It's difficult sending out a plea to save a Boston garden while those in Haiti live with devastation. However, as a long-time Boston/Somerville resident and active urban gardener, I feel compelled to spread the word about the planned removal of the Boston Greenway Gardens. A number of the master gardeners from the Somerville Garden Club gave many hours to this project.

The Rose Kennedy Greenway Gardens were built at a cost of $850,000 (provided by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society) over the course of 2008. Hundreds of volunteers, helped by professional landscaping firms and arborists, created the gardens using a plan from Halvorson Design Associates.

The Greenway Conservancy's Leadership Council (which assumed control over the land parcels from the now-defunct Massachusetts Turnpike Authority in February 2009) wants to remove the gardens and replace them with hardscaping that would enable such activities as skating and a farmer's market. Sounds reasonable if there was not already plenty of hardscaping in the Greenway area. The Greenway Conservancy also cites the cost of maintenance. MassHort has repeatedly offered to maintain and improve the parcels at no cost to the Conservancy. The Conservancy has consistently declined the offer. Here is more information on the issue:

As you may know, Somerville conducted a zoning study of Broadway in East Somerville and Winter Hill in 2008, with an eye to creating a healthier, more pedestrian-oriented plan for Broadway. You can find information about this process here.

If you support this rezoning, it would be very helpful to have you write a quick letter or email to that effect (by tomorrow afternoon -- sorry for the late notice!) to John Long and the Land Use Committee. Your email can be very brief, simply stating your support of the rezoning of Broadway, and specifically supporting healthy design and pedestrian-oriened development.

You can email John Long at Jlong@somervillema.gov or write a paper letter addressed to:
